The normally depressing black monitor lit up with a warning, the scientist in front of the computer jumped out of his seat and imagined the horrors that would ensue if it wasn't taken care of just like the manual said. Somehow, a very special tool used by his workplace to keep their secrets secret had gotten into the hands of Reddit.

He confirmed that it was what the computer thought it was and pressed the button by his desk. His co-workers instantly knew. A memetic kill agent image was somehow generated by an AI and posted onto Reddit. These memetic kill agents might seem harmless to some, but those lucky enough not to instantly die when they gaze upon them will quickly realize they can't breathe. These images held math problems so complex that even the human mind wasn't capable to process them, the brain tries to process it but in return it shut downs every other organ, either killing you or leaving you hanging between life and the cliff to death until you stop looking at them.

Luckily, the scientist was one of those who just couldn't breathe while looking at them, so in the second he saw the image and pressed the button, he was fine. Reddit had been shut down and only some were allowed on it. It took them a long time to find where the agent was, mainly since 5 of the 10 workers were just browsing r/shitposting, but they finally shot it off the platform and deleted any left residue.

The scientist then went back to reading his book, thinking about how he is a real superhero.

<Part 2>

My brain was racing the entire night. I'm not sure if I slept more than a few minutes, but I jumped out of bed a few minutes before the alarm went off and I wasn't even upset about it. With new focus, I quickly showered and got ready to go to work. I grabbed my laptop that I normally never brought and ran down to the bus to take it to work instead of driving. Once on the bus, I opened the computer and started typing up a business plan. I dashed through it, and started working on financials, something I left up to my mother usually, and realized that we were leaving money on the table in several places. I pulled examples over to the business plan and finished up right at the stop in front of our business. There were several of our employees on the bus with me and they watched with fascination as I powered through the work I was doing.

"Hi Mom, Dad, we need to talk about this place." I said as I went up to their offices. We overlooked the factory floor in a very traditional arrangement.

"What now son? Are you quitting again to find yourself?" My father used air quotes around the last bit. He had heard numerous excuses from me over the years, and I totally deserved the remark.

"No Dad, I FOUND something. And I think it will turn this business around. Take a look. Come to the conference room. Get the line managers up here too. They can tell the others." I didn't even wait for an answer and walked into our conference room with a huge projector hanging from the ceiling. Today, it warmed up right away instead of the 5 to 10 minutes it usually took. I started projecting from my laptop and began my speil.

15 minutes into my presentation, my father, who had been transfixed the entire time held up his hand. "Where did you come up with all of this?"

"Last night. I couldn't sleep" I responded. I wasn't going to tell them about the Wishmaker's Key yet. Them knowing the source could actually make this backfire hard.

"uh huh..." he nodded. "And, you say we can do this now, and give our workers raises and better benefits?"

"Yes, as a matter of fact, it's kind of imperative that we start there with the other changes too. Those changes drive the efficiencies. It was on slide 5."

A line manager raised his hand, "If this kicks off like this in the spreadsheet, you guys are going to get rich."

"No, we ALL will get rich, because of the profit sharing platform. Again, Before we weren't in the same boat. I am putting us all in the same boat we will all build together, and this will work." I couldn't believe I was able to form the the presentation and then give it to all of these people. Because, I was a fuck up. Or, I had been.

Within 6 weeks, the business was going gangbusters, and I was able find resolution to the problems of a growing business. And, I had 2 wishes left.

Hey Bay!

Oh wow, and you're back with another spooky tale. And one with a bittersweet ending too! I loved so many lines in this, the descriptions are definitely where it shines, I think.

> Their glare pierces through the layers of fabric, disapproval chilling me to the bone.

Like this for instance. Really sets up the ending twist and what you have coming.

> My insides shrivel up like dead worms on the sidewalk,

And I've mentioned this one before, but this one stood out the most to me. Really wonderful job there.

As for the ending, I have to say I quite liked the way you took it. The monster definitely felt a bit abrupt, unexplained. And I imagine that was intentional as well as because of wordcount. So this twist, making the story about this character and Jack was a great way of resolving the piece.

Very very well done!

I do just have a few bits and bobs for you,

Just noticing these now. It's not much, minor edits really.

> “It’s not safe, he’ll make…pay.”

I think you could do away with "pay" here. I know you have the theme of a 'price' for being able to talk to the dead. But with this, it makes me wonder how Jack knows about it. Makes sense that he'd know about the monster, but would he know specifics? Just a thought though.

> “Who? What about the others who came—”

Not a critique, just a question. Who is she talking about here? Previous investigators?

> Flames ignite from its hands.

Something like "Flames dance in his hands." may be better here. But that's also a commonly used personification. So go with either.

I hope this helps.

Good Words!
