A counter culture to the cybernetics and corporate overlords has gained traction: worship of a cosmic horror someone made up. The widespread devotion attracted a real one, and it hates capitalism.

Nonono. While I appreciate the praise, works of writing don't take from each other except in the case of copyright infringement. I'd love to see your spin on things.

Thank you so so much!! I intend in future stories to make them more readable -- probably use less adjectives and make the sentences less complex, but I'm glad to see someone enjoyed it nonetheless :D

In the cyberpunk world, most people have to eat Kibble (a heavily processed form of food) that is said to taste kinda of like dog food, and gangs and corporations dominate all the gardens, that pay tribute to them in exchange for protection. This on it's own opens several prompts. My favorite being

1 - Someone important to you is a shell shocked veteran. You wanna make an open field with grass, some fruit trees, and away from all the noise so that they can relax there, and you're damn willing to start your own gang for that!

2 - You're a rising Solo that recently made your name as a bodyguard, and today, Arasaka decided to hire you officially... As a delivery boy.

3 - You make money secretly growing oranges in your basement and with UV lights. Talk about the fruits as if you were talking about weed.

I turn on the TV and search for something that hasn’t been overtaken by the aliens, but there’s nothing. “Check Disney+,” My roommate says. “Are you crazy? They were the first to fall. All the good stuff is on YouTube now,” my other roommate says. I open YouTube and sure enough, we quickly find a video. An ad pops up, as always. “Are you tired of dry tentacles? Wish you could always have an endless supply of slime coming from your suckers? Try Clorox Wiptacles! For all your slimy needs.”

“Wiptacles doesn’t even make sense! How is that supposed to be punny?” The first roommate glares at the tv. “Ever since the stupid aliens, the ads suck. This whole thing sucks. I wish they would just go back to where they came from.”

Suddenly the front door is almost kicked in by loud knocking. “ARS, OPEN UP!” The door is kicked in and within seconds we’re all cuffed and on the floor facedown.

I turn to glare at my roommate. “DUDE! It’s the third time this week!”

Mostly breakfast foods, but they have other offerings as well (burgers, melts, etc). The most basic of 24-hour Diners, with interior design/decor that looks like it hasn't been updated since the early '90s (at the latest). Absolutely nothing fancy, but you don't go to Waffle House for fancy; you don't go to Waffle House for anything other than basic, edible food.

They're pretty popular in the South, because they're always open, and they always have bacon, eggs, hash browns, and grits.

Waffle House will always have your back.

I was going to write my own take on the prompt, but to follow something so beautiful, I feel would detract from it. Well done, dear writer. Well done.

I'm actually from the UK and entirely winged this story using what I found on Wikipedia. I know nothing about them or what food they serve (I assume waffles)

I can confirm that we don't have anything similar over here

UnlawfulKnights t1_ixsre1a wrote

Orion found himself standing in a field of flowers that stretched out forever, with only an enormous castle of pure platinum standing to break up the landscape. Heaven itself- the eternal resting place of good natured souls. The palace itself was the hall of heroes and home of Bahamut, where the legends and heroes of the world enjoyed an eternal feast in their honor. Instead of participating, however, Orion was arguing with the grim-looking knight guarding the door.

"I was a tyrant! I killed millions!" Orion threw his arms up in protest, pacing back and forth before the Knight. The Knight spoke plainly, without moving.

"You protected more. Your inventions help many." Orion paused, and cackled, pointing a finger at the Knight.

"The greater good is a sham! I knew that even as I said it! There is no excuse for my actions. No hell hot enough." The Knight groaned softly, and waved a hand. A projection of light manifested between them, depicting a scale.

"All are judged at the moment of their death. Their deeds are counted, their impact measured." As the Knight spoke, black coins began to stack on one side of the scale.

"Murder. Kidnapping. Torture. Your evil deeds were many indeed, and if I were permitted to I would strike you down again and again... and yet..." On the other side, white coins began to stack higher and higher until barely, just barely, the light side outweighed the dark.

"Rules are rules. You were deemed worthy." Orion watched with incredulity, before folding his arms dismissively. Fine, he supposed he couldn't argue with that, but it left one major question unanswered.

"But where is Kolm?"

Kolm was in hell. His own personal afterlife of torture. He knew this would be his end, and had accepted it. Even if his fight against Orion was just, Kolm had committed too many missteps. Too many mistakes and hasty acts that would be mere trifles on their own, but added up. Kolm's punishment was simple and elegant.

He marched over the hill and stood over a small village below, clad in armor and bearing his sword. The troops behind him readied their weapons and awaited his call. At the time, Kolm didn't know that in the village below, his family waited. They had been taken by Orion. Perhaps Kolm could have saved them if he chose to simply raid the town, or send a diplomat. But no. He didn't. And Kolm would watch himself raise his hands to the sky, calling down a rain of fire upon the village that painted the sky and the land black with hatred, over and over and over again. Forever. As he killed his family and countless innocents again, Kolm closed his eyes and sighed.

He deserved it, after all. And no one was above punishment, not even a "Hero".
