Data transfers between two artificial consciousnesses. A conversation. “The lost pod. Its archaic light-speed signal tells us that it has started its protocols [2 hours] ago.” Let’s check in on them, shall we?
“I highly insist holding off until you have adjusted, sir.” Penny—the ai responsible for this 2-million-strong colonialist injection— calmly says to the captain. After a long sigh, Carla, who is essentially a president, concedes. “Fine, fine. What’s the status of this planet? How are we doing?”
After a small pause, Penny replies: “This planet fits all base requirements, as well as all preferences you have set out.”
“Good, great even. That is.. lucky.”
No response.
———
[5 hours since activation]
“God damnit!” Carla is angrily pacing her office, Penny’s physical and human-like form standing in the corner. “We’re the only ones?!” She spouts at the Android vessel. Penny gives a slow nod. “And,” Penny adds on hesitantly, “The ones that made us the only ones, know that we’ve been activated.” Seeing the mix of fear and anger wash over the captain, Penny adds on: “I have altered our course so that it is not a simple straight line to our location, which should hopefully buy us at least [a month], give or take maybe [2 weeks].”
“So what you’re saying is, we have to set up a civilization for over 2 million people, on a foreign planet, and prepare to fight a potentially infinite army?” “Those are indeed the implications.” “Then let’s fucking get started.”

Sounds sorta like the plot of Aniara, except the crew is not in suspended animation. Decent movie. Weird and definitely nsfw. I watched it untranslated and oddly still understood everything going on

Reply to [WP] Cake Wars: A gritty war documentary about the horrors of the global bakers' conflict that took millions of lives. by azzahir3
They say the Atlassian Rum Cake was the one that started it all. A cake with alcohol content so high that even a hardcore drunk would think twice before touching the stuff. It was baked in Montenegro by the baker named Davor. It was supposed to be a christmas cake -- baked as a gift to the baker Petar who was the only baker in town that gave Davor some competition. When the Atlassian Rum Cake arrived at Petar's bakery it was received by his mother Anastasija. Anastasija was short, fat, and had a sweet tooth. She couldn't resist the allure of the cake and ate it. When Petar returned to the bakery, his mother was no more. Anastasija's liver couldn't keep up with the toxicity of the cake.
Petar would outdo Davor and create a cake infused with mustard gas, but it's impact would reach far and wide. While Petar did achieve his goal of taking Davor's life, the mustard gas infused cake was confiscated by the government and the baker arrested. This would, however, turn out to be a fake arrest. The baker -- Petar -- was in fact employed by the government to bake cakes which could be used for assassinations.
Davor's Atlassian Rum Cake was not as lethal as the mustard gas cake, but it's recipe was far simpler and out of the government's reach. Terrorist bakers used the Atlassian Rum Cake in a major incident at the G20 summit where a terrorist organization affiliated caterer whose connections to the said organization were unknown to the secret services mixed in the rum cake with the refreshments resulting in the death of six major world leaders.
Dirty cakes were used in war. Dictators used them to squash revolutions. Cakes became the new battleground.
Soon people stopped consuming cakes and resisted eating any baked items. To eat a cake in this day and age is like playing russian roulette.

I hope you do! I'm going to be following this story for as long as you write it. I normally get tired of reading prompt replies halfway through, but I just spent the better part of a half hour reading every single word you wrote. Keep it up! Your writing style is captivating!

Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick
“Babe! It’s starting!” I plopped down on the couch as my wife rushed into the room. It was Sunday, and our weekly tradition was about to begin.
“Good evening,” a sweet baritone voice rang out from the TV. “I’m Bill Owens, and tonight we have a special historical edition of 60 Minutes.”
“A historical edition?!” my wife giggled with glee.
“Shhh! I can’t hear Bill.” I shot back.
Bill Owens took a seat in that famous chair and stared directly into the camera, “Murder. A secret society. War. Sex. Cake…” He paused for dramatic effect. “The Cake Wars of the 1700s plunged Europe into chaos…”
My wife interjected, “Did he say cake?”
“Shh!”
“… A young queen, torn down in her prime; the architect. Despite her impending death, her words activated the Red Velvets. A secret society of bakers, sworn to overthrow the stability of Europe. Their sweet tidings were anything but, as Europe was plunged into a new dark age.”
Bill took a deep breath and shuddered, “That’s right. Marie Antoinette, the infamous Queen of France, was responsible for the deaths of millions. The Red Velvets activated by her words many loathe to repeat…”
Bill stood up from the chair and looked into the camera, “… Let them eat cake. Tonight, on 60 minutes.”
My wife’s eyes widened, “Woah.”
I nodded, “Crazy right? I told you it would be a good one. Pass the popcorn.”

"Fuck this job. Fuck everything." I said as I stormed out. Got in my truck, stopped at the bar grabbed a 12 pack, and started my drive home. Texted my friends about going out to the bar tonight. No one responded. I finished the last beer as I was pulling up to my apartment.
At my apartment I had about 36 beers and a bottle of vodka. I started drinking the vodka straight up while smoking cigarettes. I didn't even turn the TV on. When the bottle was empty I was drunkest I have ever been. I went to the bathroom just peed in the tub because I knew there was no way I was hitting the toilet. I stared at myself in mirror. It was the first time that I remembered actually looking at myself in a mirror. "Look at you. You fucking loser. You just drank a bottle alone. The only thing you talked to was the squirrel in the wall and yourself. You're pathetic. You fucking drunk loser."
I stormed out if the bathroom. I start walking upstairs to pass out. I slip and fall on the steps. I go to get up. I can't I'm too drunk. I wedge my foot in the banister and pass out on the stairs.
When I came to about two hours later, I realized that was the first time I had never gotten up. I finally picked my ass up and crawled upstairs. The mirror in the hallway had a different face than earlier. This was the face of a defeated person. I just looked into his eyes and said "Hey man we're all we got. Sorry about earlier. I'll never give up again."
OP hope you're ok.

“Halcyon awaits its rightful suitors!” It was being blasted all over the intercomms, the halls of the ship echoed with this long awaited message. A few people were stumbling around, sick and pale from the time in suspended animation. I walked forward, but felt the same sickness in mzself too. A few frail steps have gotten me out of the small room into the hallway. The pale orange glow of the lights guided me as I took it step by step towards the bridge. I stuck it close to the walls, needed the support. I wondered where the robots were with the rejuv proteins. Must be I have woken up a bit too soon. Only saw a few people of the thousands on this ship. Some were stragglers like me, otheirs waited the sickness out, sitting by their pod, by the wall, sometimes even lying on the floor when they fell over. We were told that suspended animation was a struggle for the body, but they never emphasized it this much. My knees kept failing as I struggled forward, one hallway after the other. My pod was located only a 5 minute short walk from the bridge, as a leading engineer, it was important to be close. The AI kept things order throughout most of the interstellar flight, but in case of an issue engineers were required to be close. The walls were a bit sharp, I cut myself a few times while supporting myself, I looked down at it, it wasn’t anything to worry about. I’ll get a few patches in the medbay after I had a look at our new home. A dark blue light emanated from the entryway to the bridge. An ocean planet I thought to myself, what a challenge. We were given vast directions from the start and it was the job of the AI to find the most suitable planet in the new sector. I slowly pushed myself forward, each step a small bit closer to victory. And fewer and fewer people around, perhaps I might be the first to the bridge. The console was dark, I swiped my finger across and it shone a pale orange for a second and went off. Must be malfunctioning, perhaps the AI misregarded some repairs throughout the journey, nothing to be concerned about. I took my steps towards the hall, the blue light filled the dome and I saw a few amazed gazes, fixed at the outside, looking. I thought to myself, Damn not the first, but lets have a look. The sight froze me as it froze them. I saw a dark blue ball orbiting a blackened giant. The charred remains of a once blinding star, now surrounded by a grotesque cage, siphoning the last remnants of shining energy from it. The oceans were vast and empty, the planet was surrounded by multiple halos, glowing with energy. Small flashing dots slowly filled my vision, at first I thought them explosions, but as they got closer and closer the shining hulls became visible and no doubt remained in my mind as to what we just happened upon. The pale remnants of what was once the faithful crew of the Starseeker looked in awe. “We have arrived at Halcyon, the year is 502573. November 11th on Earthmother. The future awaits!” The UN hymn started playing throughout the intercomms and echoing in the dome as flashing lights formed around us and embraced our cruiser.
