Done and done on the 2 suggested groups. I posted on FB marketplace, and the NOVA, GMU, and DC housing groups. Things have changed since I last sublet a few years ago, loads of scammers. It's depressing. THANK YOU!

thanks a lot for the input. what do you think is fair? I joined some sublet groups on facebook - people asking around $1000 - and up to $1700 - for a room in a shared apartment. It is all utilities included - and it's been seriously updated, but I get that renters might not care about Bosch appliances, 75" OLED TV, Sonos system....

I successfully sublet Ted my apartment using Craigslist. It took a while tho

$2100 for a one bedroom is pretty high … lots of “one month” free still going around for 12 months terms … 7 months is likely too long for a summer sublet fee

Not many folks are going to sublet for that cost when they could rent their own space for a bit less. Cut the price perhaps? Ask a realtor?

Where did you try on Facebook? Did you try the Arlington neighbors helping each other Facebook group? Maybe NextDoor?

Try /r/novarent?

I feel like most subletters are college kids or people on extended work travel trying to save money and pocket part of their travel stipend. That said, I think you may need to heavily discount the unit to get any bites. Not going to be many people interested in subletting an apartment at market rate.

As the other commenter said, the 16 buses have a stop in front of the apartment complex (very short walk no matter where in the complex you are). If you know where you’ll be working you can use the trip planner on the WMATA website to see what your route would be like.

Not OP but Columbia Pike MetroBus 16 routes are very regular and pretty reliable (maybe between 10-20 mins, but I never looked up actual times when I have used it and normally on weekends for me..constant buses in the mornings and afternoons). Takes you to Pentagon or Pentagon city Metro.

How big a place do you need - do you have a spouse and children or are you alone? Apartments on the metro are expensive. Definitely look at the prices before you decide on your job. We have amazing access to restaurants with food from around the world. Most are very reasonably priced and having a car makes it easy to eat around the world. Some great choices for inexpensive ethnic restaurants on Columbia Pike. Many more inexpensive ethnic restaurants are in Fairfax County and not metro accessible. Access to DC and the Smithsonian is fantastic - it's easy to pop in just to see one work of art or make a last minute decision to visit. Bars are kind of expensive for cocktails - almost NYC prices! Eating and drinking in DC is pretty expensive overall but you can find inexpensive gems and lots of happy hours. Groceries are expensive (as they are everywhere!) but there are 2 Aldi supermarkets right outside of Arlington's boundaries. Lots of young people live in Arlington and Arlington is frequently on top of lists like "best places to live" "most fit population" "highest level of education" etc. That's what makes Arlington really amazing. Living Wage for Arlington is $50K for a single - that's meeting all basic needs. $100K would be very comfortable but keep on saving! https://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/51013

Thank you very much! I noticed that it's quite far from the metro station (since I don't have a car). How do you access public transport? Do they offer any shuttle service?

My apartment complex in Arlington is $1470 for a 1 bedroom and utilities are included. The buildings are old, but they’re well kept and there’s a pool and fitness center.

When I first moved here, I made 40k and living comfortably. I know I have a steal on rent but I pay about 1700 with utilities in a one bedroom with a balcony.

You could do it at an apt that offers subsidies by the county look into that, otherwise roommates!

60k is fine, provided you have no debt. Half of your net will go to rent (unless you get some roommates); spend/save the other half wisely.

I was making $60k/year when I first moved to Arlington in 2015 and I lived pretty comfortably, but I was pretty good about keeping my base expenses in check. My car was fully paid off and I shared a 2br/2ba apartment with a roommate. My rent was $1,314.29/ month including parking and (some) utilities, though it was walking distance to the Orange and silver lines and in a great neighborhood. Rents have gone up since then but not as much as you would think. My wife and I share a larger 2br/2ba apartment now for $3,200/month incl. parking and you can definitely find cheaper options.
The trick is living with a roommate. 2br/2ba situations apartments are often cheaper than 3br or group house situations. If you insist on going at it alone the math goes to shit. It’s not impossible, but you’ll have much less in the way of discretionary income, live in a much older unit (probably without laundry) and live in a much worse part of town. The options get better as you get away from the city, but not enough to be recommended. You’ll also be spending considerably more in gas, mass transit fares and Ubers since everything is so spread out the further you get from the city. I probably wouldn’t recommend solo living in Arlington to anyone making less than $85k/year.
If you’re young and single you really want to be in DC or Arlington. The dating scene in the rest of nova can be pretty brutal.

No worries, I get it! Even on that neighbors group, I’ve had someone try to scam me for a concert ticket.
