RMSF targets small blood vessels as the cells that make up the walls become damaged when the organism replicates. As a result, inflammation occurs (vasculitis) and thrombi can form (which can block other blood vessels). This prevents oxygenated blood and nutrients from reaching certain parts of organs and nerves, causing cells to die.
