I hope you applied for the homestead tax credit. You probably can’t win any appeal since they’re saying it’s basically worth what you paid and what it was appraised for.

You’re a property owner now and that means paying taxes on the value of your property.

For as charming as the city is, it could be even more charming if more people simply gave AF about the city. Literally not trashing it is like the easiest thing to do. Much of the city is downright filthy.

If Brandon Scott were to go full throttle on an ongoing city cleanup effort and campaign, I would consider this a huge success for his political career and future prospects.

A friend lives in a REALLY NICE carriage home off Rt 7 in Aberdeen. I'd live in her neighborhood.

I strongly suggest visiting the area. Go drive around during the day and at night, midweek and on the weekend. Some areas of Aberdeen are SUPER SKETCH (we used to call it Aberdump back when Joppatowne was a nice place to live). Someone else mentioned the booms from APG - this is normal, you'll get used to it. Don't hang anything fragile on the walls. Don't put anything fragile in an open-front bookshelf or cabinet. I can't tell you how many tchotchkes we found on the floor after a particularly active day. Also we used to get mustard gas warnings, so don't be shocked when that happens.

A plus: you're pretty close to Havre de Grace, which is a cute little town to visit. There's also a really good liquor store up in Elkton, State Line, which carries the best mead I've ever consumed.

You should always appeal. Cite the (temporarily) low interest rates that lead to your inflated purchase price, and document all of the comparable properties in your neighborhood that are assessed at less. You should expect to waste a day or two (8-16h) fighting it, but presumably a perpetual 70% increase to your tax bill is worth that. Get a court date if it comes down to it. You will probably be able to settle for a light fucking instead of the whole thing.

If no one fights, the city uses the assessment of house A to increase the assessment of house B one year, and then use the increased assessment of house B to increase the assessment of house A the next. The city wins eventually either way, it's only a matter of how quickly and arbitrarily we allow them to rip us off.

Honestly, the biggest thing that grinds me gears is people throwing trash bags into the recycling. DPW just skips those cans then on both collection days because they can’t take plastic bags on recycling and they’re not in green cans for trash.

I’m in my early thirties and live between Pikesville and Owings Mills. Been here most of my life and while you won’t just randomly meet others the same age, it’s a relatively safe and easy area with quick access to everything. Towson/Timonium might give you more access to people closer in age.

I'm lowkey curious where this happened - there's a pretty well known dickbag in Hampden who rides around with his toddler on the back of his bike and deliberately puts himself and his kid in harm's way to antagonize drivers. He's unhinged and well known in the neighborhood. Stuff like crossing at speed in front of a car when the driver is proceeding on a green light, then following the car while screaming at the driver. All with a toddler on the back. What you described could just be regular city-living lapse-in-judgment, but yeah, watch out for this dude.

Interested in this too, Baltimore is such an old city that there has to be something neat buried around somewhere. I've seen videos where folks do bottle collecting from old dumps too, seems like fun.

I'm not sure if everyone on this thread will know already, but there are also a lot of places in Baltimore with one-way car traffic and two-way bike lanes. Certain motorists and pedestrians will be caught off guard by this, especially when it's fairly newly painted/installed like on Lanvale or on 20th.
