I recommend looking into getting a Handgun Qualification License (HQL) and then apply for your wear and carry permit. Now that Maryland is a "shall issue state", you should have no problem getting one, unless you are a felon or something.

I think there is a company that makes jogger pants with a concealed gun pocket, should you continue to run at night.

First of all, that statement isn’t even factually accurate. Actually take a look at the racial demographics of the cities included.

Second of all, looking at cities is pretty arbitrary. If you look at a state level, a plurality (if not majority) of the most violent states actually have relatively low Black population..

Thirdly, in cases where a city is particularly violent AND the racial demographics are “primarily Black”, either by majority or plurality, these cities are often also relatively poor, so the primary analysis is actually more that “poor crowded people tend to experience/cause more crime”, and “Black people are disproportionately poor”, which isn’t really surprising. Sure, there might be other nuanced perspectives there, but these two are the elephants in the room.

Given your wife’s preferences, I’m inclined to suggest B & O Brasserie, .4 miles down Charles Street. It’s relatively fancy and solidly “upscale mainstream American”.

The only thing is that their hours on Sundays are 8-12, then opens again at 5. You would be looking more at late breakfast/early brunch.

It’s a great spot — I’ve celebrated my birthday there in years past.

Otherwise, CIVIL, EDR (Eat Drink Relax), and some places in Mt Vernon Marketplace might work. My only reservation with Mt Vernon Marketplace is that the options are quite diverse in terms of cuisine styles (off the top of my head, Asian dumplings, tacos, Korean/fusion, ramen). There is a great oyster place, a good burger place, and a fish place (Fishnet). All are fun, but they seem less “birthdayish” to me.

If you switch over to having dinner, a number of other options open up, including the classic Sotto Sopra (Italian) down the street between Walters and B & O Brasserie (right near the Cathedral). Sammy’s Trattoria also opens at 5, and is the opposite direction (north).

The atmosphere is it's selling point for many people, so it just sounds like the restaurant isn't your style or preference, versus it actually being bad. It sounds like you went in with the wrong expectations. Which happens to all of us with different restaurants and other things we try. Joe Benny's is a favorite in my house, but I can also see how it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. I just think that's different than something being bad.

Good call — Cajou is great, but fair warning, it’s 5 blocks and .3 miles away from Walters. A walk Im easily willing to make, but others might not want to.

That being said, if OP is already going to Mt Vernon Marketplace (which IMO seems like the best option) that’s literally just a block and a half from Cajou.
