honestly nothing compares. when I get homesick I go visit relatives or friends in NY/NJ. I appreciate baltimore for what its good at (more lowkey unpretentious vibes + its own kind of cuisine), not for what it could imitate about other places. if you want bootleg NYC go to chicago

really wish we had more fuckin trains though

Have to agree on Goldbergs, especially their bagels. It's also a good place to inquire if you have a child who's got allergies. (Or maybe you have them yourself.) Delicious allergy-free sweet treats available on request.

For too long, Baltimore City (and Maryland state) government(s) have had no urgency for economic policy and infrastructure investment geared toward the city's overall population growth and stimulating business demand. As a result, there's a drag on the presence of amenities in this city; and in my opinion, this plays out most vividly in the food sector, both retail and restaurants. Grocery stores don't want to come here & restaurants open today, go out of business tomorrow, and have early closing hours in the interim. It's all pathetic given the city's beauty, potential, and youthful vibe---there could be a booming night time economy here.

All that said, not sure where you live but American Pizza & Wings has really good (non NY-style) pizza...closes at 1AM weekdays, 2AM wknds. Silver Moon 1 is open till 3AM every day...I've heard from a friend that it's good but never personally had it.

go out in mt vernon, station north, etc. reminds me of parts of brooklyn but without as much congestion. baltimore as a whole reminds me of what my family says nyc was like in the 70s though, and it's a vibe i like a lot. also i'm somehow less scared of dying when i do city biking here!

Cherry Hill Food Co Op and Baltimore Jail Support. Volunteer for either org and you will do* some real on the ground good community building, and you do not have to be a socialist/anarchist to belong! But your mom may meet some likeminded caring people.

My neighbor, in Baltimore city, had someone break down their door and enter into the house. When the unarmed homeowner told the individual to leave, the individual proceeded to attack my neighbor (older man) and aggressively beat them to the point of hospitalization. It went from nothing to life or death in an instant. When the cops showed up, they almost shot my neighbor (as he was delusional after the beating) but thankfully someone was outside and screamed that he lived there. They ultimately caught the guy hours later and because he was drunk/high, only misdemeanor chargers and was out by the next day.

If someone breaks into your house, they should be categorically viewed as an existential threat, especially given age, size, and strength disparity.

You have ZERO idea of someone's intention or capability when they break into your house, especially at night and especially if you are a woman.
