Nearly 20 years ago I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy -and I loved it. After that I read his Border Trilogy, which I enjoyed. Then I attempted Blood Meridian... and I could not get into it. At all. Fast forward to this weekend: I'm perusing my shelves looking for something to read and, with mild trepidation, picked Blood Meridian. I fucking love this book. It's extraordinary. This point of this post is not a review of a popular novel. I just wanted to point out how often this has happened to me. At 30 Blood Meridian hit me like a cruel slog. It wasn't FOR me. At 47, it's like magic. This is why I like to return to books periodically throughout my life. They always hit differently.
