The film version of this story (the one from 1963, not the horrid 1999 remake) has been one of my most beloved movies since I was a kid, and I've been familiar with Shirley Jackson's work for many years. Yet, somehow I've never gotten around to reading The Haunting of Hill House until now. It's a phenomenal work, delivering a brand of horror far more insidious than the shrieking apparitions and splatters of gore people typically expect from such a story. The real horror of Hill House is the darkness and insecurities the main character has locked away inside her, and the way the House seeks to unlock those doors. This book is magnificent. I'll have to revisit the film version later today. I was also reminded earlier that Netflix series exists, so I'll finally check that out, too.

As for Jackson herself, I think The Sundial is next on my list, once I've finished another Discworld book and knocked a couple of other books off the backlog.
