I don’t know why this book seems to be so popular… I’m inclined to believe that it is most likely bc of the subject matter. I’m a black girl and I am really not a fan of it.
I suppose that the primary issue is with the verbosity - I feel that the book stands out as clearly being written by an adult who doesn’t know how teenagers talk, or anything about 2010s teen culture. It’s part of why I’m finding it to be such a drag to read.
It quite literally reads like it’s one of those books that the author hoped would be made into a movie - a novel that was written so that it could be read in middle and high school classes to non-black audiences.
I’m also not invested in any of the characters? I’m not done w it, but I don’t care about Starr and have no desire to read the next couple of chapters (I think that our class is starting chapter 8.) I preferred “Push” by Sapphire which we read before this by far.
This feels like a novel that was written to make non-black audiences “think.”
Idk, I do think that the subject matter is important but I’m just so, so disappointed. I hate the fact that I have to read this book.
