I recently started reading a coming of age novel about a teenager hitchhiking through Italy. The book was very well written, it had credible dialogue, great insights into the mind of the protagonist, and the descriptions of the places they visited were highly enjoyable. The problem was that every two or three chapters, the main character stopped the action to describe in excruciating detail how much their shoes reeked after days on the road (even naming them "Saddam's atomic bombs"). That admittedly minor thing really took me out of the story, and after a while it became so grating that I had to quit reading the book. Have you come across other minor details that made you lose your interest in finishing a story?
