I belong to a writer’s group, and people often debate the merits of trying to get their book published by a publishing house, or self-publishing it. Now, personally, if I saw that a book was self-published, I would be much less likely to try it. Not that self-published books are all bad or traditionally published ones are all great. But I have limited reading time, and seeing that a book is trad.published means it has at least passed a minimum bar of competence and editing.

There are authors who aren’t sure if, given the limited amount of marketing publishers do, they might be just as well off self-publishing. How much are they limiting their potential readership?

How do you feel about it? If you saw a book marketed or sold online and you saw that it was self-published, would it affect your decision to buy it?
