There’s a few for me that stand out:

  • Ciudad Juárez by Charles Bowden while studying border issues in college completely mystified me in a strange and horrifying way.
  • Secret History by Donna Tartt while backpacking through Ecuador transported me home during moments of profound homesickenss.
  • Autumn of the Patriarch by García Márquez while teaching English in Barranquilla, Colombia. The constant heat and incredibly long, slow sentences created an unforgettable atmosphere.
  • Dark Star Safari by Paul Thoreau during covid quarantine. The introduction succinctly describes the feeling of wanting to shed modern life and sit in the back a of truck and travel a foreign country.
