For me, it’s My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent. The graphic depictions of the sexual, emotional and physical abuse this girl goes through my her father in the redwood wilderness is hard to read but like witnessing a bad car wreck, it’s hard to look away. The writing was unique and the scenery, as well as the main character herself, was hopeful and had a sense of demented beauty to it. Definitely not for the faint of heart tho.

Other disturbing books I’ve read are: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. I recommend all of them if you can stomach them.
