Recently I read an unabridged copy of The Count of Monte Cristo for the first time. The only other experience I have had with this book was watching the 2002 movie adaptation (with Henry Cavill as Albert Mondego). Honestly, I assumed the movie adaptation followed the book quite closely and I was surprised to realize that the movie was dramatically different than the book. I was also surprised to realize that I preferred the movie ending over the book ending. Has anyone ever experienced something similar with a different book?

Spoiler thoughts on The Count of Monte Cristo below. Probably don't read unless you have both read the book and watched the movie.

>!The movie ends with it being revealed that Albert is actually Edmond's son and Mercedes married Fernand because she realized she was pregnant and wanted a husband because of the negativity back then of having a bastard child. Edmond and Mercedes end up getting back together. The book ends with Fernand not being Edmond's son and joining the army. Mercedes goes into seclusion in a small cottage. Edmond gets together with a young (teenage?) girl who had been his slave. Suffice it to say, I much preferred the movie ending and was rather disappointed in the book ending, by comparison.!<
