In other words, what book has the highest delta between fame (how many people have heard of it) and adoption (how many people have actually read it)?

I'm limiting this question to novels to rule out the obvious answers, which are probably religious texts like the Bible or the Quran.

Les Miserables strikes me as a candidate - it's long and unevenly paced, it's a major bummer, and it's been adapted into other media so it might have a higher name recognition than readership.

Other thoughts?
