I'm reading through The Hunt for Red October and this book is fascinating. There is no tension or threat by the antagonist. There is only the overwhelming military might of the USA.

This book reads like the average high-school story where the nerdy kid overcomes the bullies and gets with the popular girl but from the perspective of the bully. You would follow his life from waking up in his home on the hills to riding his dad's boat with the other popular kids with no irony or introspection.

I get the feeling these books are like comic books for Republicans. A power fantasy. Mom can't take me to bed! I'm Superman/Jack Ryan!

Anyone else have the same interpretation?
