Ripoff post from r/movies. What book had some throwaway line or plot convenience that revealed the writer did not do the research or otherwise tainted the book for you?

I really hate how beloved World War Z is for one reason. In college, I was lucky enough to attend a school where the Japanese History teacher had studied for decades in a martial art passed down by the literal samurai of 500 years ago, so I learned classical Japanese swordsmanship for years. World War Z has a story about a nerdy Japanese otaku who, IIRC, realizes the zombie apocalypse has started way too late because he spends all his time on his computer. The story is all about him trying to make it out of his apartment complex alive, and it ends when he gets into a neighboring apartment and finds... a katana.

And that's it. We're expected to believe that having a katana means you can use it effectively to slice through a horde of zombies, and not that it'll get stuck in a zom's collarbone right before he rips you in half. Every time I hear people lament about the bad movie adaptation or say the book would make a perfect HBO miniseries, I remember that scene and cringe.

What's yours?
