I just finished an actresses/comedians book that just really soiled my opinion of her and I’m curious if anyone else ever experienced the same.
I absolutely love this comedian and absolutely have watched everything she has done. So when I picked up this book I expected to tremendously love it… but she came off so… bad.
Reading it felt like someone took the window screen off the window and let all the bugs in. Like I was still getting the all the nice sunlight and breeze but then getting bitten by poop-joke mosquitoes and jokes-that-go-too-long gnats that just keep buzzing in your face, eyes, and ears.
Typically she comes off funny and “real” in the things she makes, but this came off as funny (there were funny bits) and cringy as heck. It felt like a comedians first draft for a set that she is still workshopping. She try’s to be “real” but the covers it up with a thin joke. It’s like when I try to talk to my therapist about my problems while also covering it with a thin layer of irony to make it fun.
Honestly the whole thing felt like I was her therapist and she is sitting in front of me trying to “prove” why she deserves to be in therapy.
It was one of the most “real” autobiographies I have ever read. But damn, it made me realize I didn’t want to be around this person. Maybe it did the job well if that’s how I felt after?
Theo whole book felt like it was going for a theme, but because the author didn’t really believe the theme it fell short hard.
