If you read and understood it in third grade, I’m guessing you read a Children’s edition. Which probably took a more straightforward narrative approach rather than using the letters that Mary Shelley used as her narrative device

Yes, there are multiple versions out there. You undoubtedly read an abridged edition of some kind the first time around. Probably a children's edition, if you were in third or fourth grade.

Best of luck with the new job and your reading goal! Goodreads is really handy but takes some getting used to (it’s easier to navigate on desktop I find, but it’s more convenient to be used on a phone).

I’m doing the same thing! I’ve never used Goodreads before so I’m trying to track my reading this year. My goal is 50 books this year because I’m starting a new full time job and I know there will be weeks where I just don’t want to read anything.

Oh yeah. I lose time reading all the time. I MADE myself not read fiction in college (unless it was fanfic, lol) because I have no willpower when it comes to a good book. I read before falling asleep, but last night I was in bed at 10 and was still awake at 1 before I finally put the book down. I always think there could be worse addictions . . .

It was my first Ruth Ware book.
It was solid and enjoyable and I will read more of her stuff probably.
It didn't blow me away like some mystery/thrillers do.

And that's okay.
In 2021 I read 48 books.
Guess how many in 2022? Around 8.
Reading is so personal, that there's no point in comparing yourself to others.

Yep. I really didn’t like it and do not get the hype at all. 🤷♀️

This year I’m trying to read 40 books, and I want to expand beyond memoirs and romance (pretty much all I read last year). So far I’m 6 books in, and I’ve read sci-fi, thriller, romance, and YA fiction. It’s been fun so far!

I didn’t mind the Death of Mrs. Westaway. There’s another one that I can’t think of the title. I find when your characters are so shallow it’s hard to be invested. Hannah was just nothing but a wet Kleenex. Overall, she is not an author I seek out. I see her as an author to read on a plane and, and then leave the book in the airport for someone else. This one was recommended to me and I won’t be taking that friend’s recommendations any more.
I think I’m pretty much over the lead character being a female who doesn’t have her shit together or never grows as a person. Probably just me.

Not the OP but my favorites by her are the Turn of the Key and the Death of Mrs Westaway.

I really like ReadswithRachel. She is pretty 'harsh' in her book reviews and a lot of people say she is too negative, but I appreciate her honesty. She also reads a lot of fundamentalist Christian work because she grew up fundie and got out and she critiques a lot of what those authors have written and has an inside perspective.
She also has a series called Authors Behaving Badly where she discusses authors who have done or said fucked up stuff and explains what happened.
I also like TheBookLeo. She used to do mostly YA books but she's branched out a lot and is reading more adult literature and classics. She's very chill and is very aesthetic in her filming. She does like a lot of tropes I don't like but she has recommended books I have ended up liking.

Which books of her are “the good stuff”? It Girl is my first book. I like how well written it is, but, like you, could give less of a shit for the two dislikable lead characters.

I don’t think Will was laughing cruelly. I think he was laughing incredulously and was DONE with Hannah’s bullshit (much as I was already by that point good lord).
From his POV his pregnant wife not only REPEATEDLY purposely risks the health of their unborn baby, she keeps poking his trauma and now is accusing him of murder.
And since Hannah is a total idiot (I swear to god smdh) she misconstrues it.
Anyway, this book was very well written but ultimately a disappointment. Most of the cliches I can forgive. But I’m over authors trying to make me care for “complicated” (read bitch bullies) girls like April being murdered, and dumbass doormat girls like Hannah hung up for a decade on the murder of their bully.

I have a list of books I read in high school (back in the '70s) and my goal is to re-read them as an adult. Also reading other books that weren't in my school curriculum, but were in other school curriculums.

I'm reading it right now, actually. I'm not crazy about her novels, but seem to end up buying them often anyway, lol. They're dependable & nice during winter.
At the halfway point, I'm enjoying it much more than Mrs. Westaway. For me, that & the Lying Game are at the bottom.

The Vladimir Nabakov Challenge.
To read a few books but read them lovingly and with the attention they deserve.

In reading, one should notice and fondle details.

You’d be surprised to know there are people who read over 150 books a year (granted they’re book bloggers but still discouraging at times).
