I just read my first Agatha Christie last week! I read And Then There Were None. I really enjoyed it. It's so interesting to read a book and see where some mystery troupes literally originated.

Are you dyslexic? It sounds like you could be

I also enjoyed this book a lot, but if you allow, how do you feel about the casually thrown around racism in her books? If I recall correctly there is even a moment in which Poirot compares the egyptians to dogs? I am not trying to ruffle some feathers, just an honest questions because this is something that bothers me about her books although I enjoy them otherwise.

I absolutely love Elephants can Remember! But I completely agree about The Big Four. My two favorites are Crooked House and Towards Zero. :)

I'm not a doctor or expert of anykind but have you been tested for dyslexia?

Sounds like you might have dyslexia or something similar mate. Have you ever taken a test for it?

She had a few klunkers, especially early (The Big Four) and late (Elephants can Remember) in her career, but most of them are cracking good yarns, as they say.
My two favorites: The Mirror Crack'd and Crooked House

Most of my reading is non-fiction. My book collection is mostly non-fiction.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles was quite a drag, but understandable since it was her very first book.

Oh yes, I once read a history book in 2 or 3 sittings and I realized I remembered little to nothing from what I'd read. So I read it again chapter by chapter and I can actually recall details and events much more clearly.

It may affect presentation but I have a list of sticky post it notes - whenever there's something you find it interesting, jot it in a post it note and stick back in the relevant page - you can always read back and what you've written may jot back your memory on it

Are you reading in a quiet environment without any distractions? Do you have any major stressors happening in your life at the moment? These can affect your concentration and retention of the material. You are certainly not dumb but I would talk with a counselor or teacher at your school and see if they can arrange a talk with a specialist if needed.

Hey! You’re not stupid. You reached out for help, which shows wisdom.
Other people here can also probably help, but what works for me is to take notes - get a notebook, index cards, postits, whatever l, and take notes about what’s happening. If you have to stop and think about it, do so.
If this is a difficulty you have all the time, please talk to someone - does your school have any kind of counselling? The important thing is you’re not to blame for some minor quirk in how your brain works, but you can find out how to manage it.
Good luck!

I have been like a kid in a candy store since discovering reddit book suggestion sites because I can learn what other readers love to read. These include r/historical fiction, r/romancebooks, r/horrorlit, r/fantasy, r/printsf, r/audiobooks.
I also check the staff picks shelf at my local bookstore. Best of the year articles from reputable newspapers. Lists of award winners.
I only use Goodreads to store my I might like to read this book list, because it is convenient to have the linked summary right there when I choose my next book.

Mostly SF and Fantasy books, some classics sprinkled here and there.
- Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews - Fantasy (recent discovery, love his content. he seems very genuine and I like his enthusiasm)
- Petrik Leo - Fantasy (I got many underrated, more obscure recommendations from him)
- Media Death Cult - SF (I'm a sucker for his top books videos)
- BookswithEmilyFox - Mix of everything, mostly SF, Fantasy, a few classics and she also reads a lot of contemporary (I really like her vibe)
- * e m m i e * - Classics mostly and a mix of others (Cozy vibes)
- Better Than Food - Classics (A bit pretentious for my taste but I got some great recommendations from him and he can sell you on any book)
- Kalanadi - SF (Haven't watched her lately but she was reading through the SF Masterworks collection)
- PeruseProject - Fantasy (previously I think she did a lot of YA, now I see it's mostly Fantasy, or at least the videos I watch from her)
- Daniel Greene - SF, Fantasy (I don't watch him as much anymore, his content is more centered around news and other media besides books lately. I think he also tries a bit too hard to be funny/entertaining. I do watch his top SF/Fantasy books videos / tier lists)

'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' might be her best, in terms of Poirot stories. Def put that on your list

Some books are harder than others. Check online for a summary of the book. r/homeworkhelp may have some ideas. If this is an ongoing problem, it may be your teachers or it may be a disability. You can talk to a school counselor or a doctor. Other people here will also likely have good advice.

I read about everything.. but I have noticed about myself that covers of books are really what draw my attention. If something catches my eye immediately I feel drawn to it. Then do my normal research on the book, reviews & so far I’ve had a pretty great outcome. Getting through all of the Colleen Hoover books which I started reading last year in February. I just began reading the Maybe Someday series this morning. Idk if anyone else is the same way about the covers. It’s in the details for me. The color, material, design .. it’s weird but not 🙃

When they finally adapted The Big Four, for the David Suchet version... Well, it's one of the most interesting adaptations of a book to screen I've seen. Very different, but imo, very good changes.
