I think it's sad that these young men (well, maybe Kanye's no longer young) are missing out on the creativity, inspiration, exploration, and diverse perspectives that come from reading. Kanye says he'd rather have a conversation with a person, but books can be a conversation with people we can no longer reach due to death, imprisonment, or a reclusive lifestyle. If you agree or disagree with the author, you're in dialogue with their work. Kanye might also say these perspectives aren't worth considering, but we can learn a great deal from the past or from those who are walking a different path.
Finally, I wonder how strictly the three men adhered to the book-free lifestyle. Are newspapers and magazines out because they contain multiple articles? What about short stories? They talk about books and reading as a punishment, which I simply can't relate to. Did high school English turn them off? Did they read books about their professions and get bored, or have they tried fiction? So many questions.

I love Towards Zero and Crooked House. I also love Nemesis, Sleeping Murder and 5 Little Pigs. She's endlessly inventive and quite remorseless.

I recently read "And Then There Were None" and I loved it. I started reading "Murder on the Orient Express" right after. She quickly became one of my favorite authors.

Doesn't Theo go outside and catch snowflakes while the investigator reads the journal?
The one part of the book which was a dead give away for me was the neighbor that was always in everyone's business. Michaelides tries to discredit her, so I figured he was trying to direct attention away from her story.

Your post is AMAZING!! I came here to say something you covered beautifully...
”Stalk” like-minded readers for recommendations. In a similar vein, if you find a user with similar taste—especially if they have a “favorite books” shelf that’s similar to yours—their profile can be a great source for book recommendations. It’s worth reading some of their reviews, though, to see if they like books for the same reason you do (eg, if I love Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca” because of the prose and another reader loves the same book in spite of her descriptive writing style, we might not be a great fit).
That's 100% what I do - particularly for a specific genre. There's someone I found and follow where I pick up all my hick-lit and the like suggestions. She reads several books a week and I know her well enough to know which books are for me. Rarely a miss. Sometimes beyond amazing!
When I see a review that totally clicks with me - I'll start by doing a book comparison with the review writer. That's a pretty straight forward way to see if you have enough in common and which type of books you have in commom.

Just coming to recommend this book. It might be a stretch, but I think this actually hits 3 of the 4 themes (1, 2, 4).

Well, the days are gradually getting shorter and I'll be back to work in about 3 weeks and that'll probably be the end of it for the next 9 months but until then I plan to make the most of it.

I think the first two Mysterious Affair of Styles and Murder on the Links are good intros to Poirot to read before. I think it’s worth reading Ackroyd early because it’s so easy to get spoiled.

Full agree, haven’t read The Road yet and I want to but just from what I’ve heard it’s pretty rough so I’ve been hesitant lol. Child of God wasn’t on my radar will have to check it out.

I only read The Border (nothing on the book indicated it was part of a trilogy or I would have started at the beginning!), but it blew me away too. Rarely has a book come so vividly to life in my mind, probably since most of it actually happened, hah. So much work must have gone into the series, and it was obviously worth it.

I’ll suggest anything by Cormac McCarthy. Blood Meridian was one that really stuck with me.
