Library all the way, I agree. I use the Libby app so I don’t even have to leave my home and I can put holds on books.

I buy books if they’re new and I really want them.

Disclaimer: Libby is based on your library’s e-book selection, and that selection varies

I have been in a 2 person book club for 6 years. We started by reading the novels list in “The Well Educated Mind.” We add a Christian living and a philosophy/education book also. We meet as regularly as once a week during the summer and every few months when we are too busy. I have definitely become more educated. I even got to be a guest on a podcast after sending an email to the podcast host about my reading journey.

Now that you mention it, YES! In TV shows and movies, the villains never kill the main character because they are so full of themselves and explaining why they are superior, giving the main character time to get out of what looks like a sure death for a lesser victim (James Bond, Wild Wild West,etc.). Now that I think of it, it is the same in books! If the bad guy just shut up and pulled the trigger there would be a lot fewer main characters out there. Thanks for pointing this out.

I'd call it borrowing, not renting. In my experience, renting implies that you paid money to use something for a short while. Borrowing implies that you did not pay money and were gifted the use of something for a short while.

That being said, I definitely prefer to buy. I annotate my books and I can't do that if it doesn't belong to me. But I am always looking for deals and ways to save money on books. And I appreciate that libraries are there for people to use and to make reading more accessible. But I'm also in a place where I can personally afford to buy my own books and I'm grateful for that fact.

I don't really much care if someone else borrows or buys their books. They're still a "real" reader in my eyes either way.

Because, as you said, Victorian England didn't have forensics. And they hanged people convicted of murder. In order to shoot Sir Henry, Stapleton would have to be there.

With a gun, there's suspicion. While a death by dog would, at worst, be put down to death by dog and, at best, down to the local legend. While Stapleton could definitely be elsewhere in front of witnesses when Sir Henry is killed.

I always took it as being a way to cover his own tracks (if an animal did it, he wouldn't be a suspect by default). Holmes himself points out that without tying him to the hound (which he had hidden really well and could theoretically put down and hide in the swamp if need be), there's no case against him beyond the flimsy circumstantial evidence.

While convoluted, the plan was more or less effective. The slip-ups that led Holmes to the truth were plausible ones that could be worked around (and the only one that really was his carelessness was telling Watson that he had been a teacher, since Holmes was able to use that background check him and figure out who he really was).

I keep buying books and adding to my TBR pile at home because I like it. Yes, I could just borrow books from the library, but I like buying books. I grew up a very poor bookworm. I only had access to books from libraries (not very good ones) or for free from whatever people discarded that I was lucky enough to get. I really like being able to financially support authors and bookstores now, especially while the authors are still alive to benefit from it. I couldn't afford it for most of my life, now that I can it's a treat I indulge in.

Lol my husband and I also have a two person book club! My husband is aware we’re in a book club, but it’s a little quirky. We declare where we are in the book when we’re ready for “book club.” Then the other person says when they’ve caught up. Then we discuss whatever exciting, shocking, non-sensical event occurred. We have a lot of fun with it

I feel that so hard. I don't think I can get used to it but maybe that's great because it feels really awesome. It absolutely confuses me when people don't use libraries. Idk it's actually like going to a bookstore, taking every book you want and not having to pay. Plus it's usually more comfortable and more quiet.
