Jailed, usually, rather than murdered. Murder was illegal.
And you're attributing an argument to me that I haven't made, then arguing against it. At no point did I advocate any particular course of action. I simply presented a sociological reason for the decline of non-sexual same-sex physical affection that was omitted from the comment to which I was responding.

Love it. It's a book about a messed up kid (from things like his brother recently dying of luekema, going to a boarding school where students are bullied to suicide (one he witnessed)) and nobody really seems to he there to help him with any of this, so he fantasized about helping keep other kids from experiencing the same as a maladaptive coping mechanism. But this window into this kids head, and how he tries to and (imo) begins to process his experience and begin to accept them, are super compelling to me. Folks who call him an annoying kid either were probably forced to read it while they were also an 'annoying' child or they're just unwilling or unable to empathize with this poor kid and just see the immature (after all he's 16) coping mechanisms and reactions to the society he lived in.

100 years is not pedantry, I think you get a pass.

Before I found reddit, I browsed shelves in bookstores and libraries. I read best books of the year articles. I paid attention to award winners.
Now I still do all that, but I also spend time on r/suggestmeabook, r/fantasy, r/printsf, r/historicalfiction.
Other people use r/romancebooks and r/horrorlit.
But every book is a bit of a gamble.

Lol no worries. I did read the first Witcher book, I don't remember why I didn't continue. I'll look into His Dark Materials. Thanks for the suggestions!

On top of this, I've noticed that men were not obsessed with sports during that time but more in arts, literature, and culture.

In that they were murdered the second they peeked out in the open? Sure, how does that change anything? Are you suggesting that gay people should go back in the closet and disappear so that men can hold each others hands without being accused of being gay, because that's ridiculous.
Your entire argument hinges upon the need to force same-sex attracted people back into the closet, that's insane and you're insane for arguing that we should do that. It's truly troubling that we're still dealing with people obsessed with not being called gay, and that people like you are the main perpetrators for it by implying its a bad thing to be gay.

Are you from US? I think they only do that if you have the US version but you are not living there, therefore most ads will not be applicable to you anyway.

I didn't see that you mentioned it in the original post lol I'm sorry.
Hmm maybe His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman? Or something like The Witcher saga by Sapkowski? I know I'm recommending stuff that comes from TV shows but don't let the adaptations fool you π

It's always been my motto that if you don't like reading a book you should skip it, no matter whatever reputation it has. Thanks for the good luck though!

From what I know of the Victorian era, men were much more free to express themselves. The emphasis wasn't on being macho, it was on being cultured.

Reply to Getting better at DNFing books by deepug9787
I actually have a goal to DNF 10 books this year. I often stick it out with books that just are working for me. Now, I'll get to "accomplish" part of my reading goals by putting the book down.

when I'm about to choose what to read is one of the best parts.the second is to go to the bookstore to look for something that suits me.I am a big reader of novels, I also like travelogues a lot.Me is usually like being hungry for something, if that ever happened to you. It makes you crave pizza.I say to myself...
damn I would like to read A NICE MISTERY BOOK but in a noir style set in ,...And I look for what I need. Obviously, if it's something easy, I go to the bookstore, if it's something complex, I first search online. Then I take a few books, I compare them.....FOR AN HOUR...and I take them BOTH! :D

Have you tried the Mistborn books by Brandon Sanderson? It is my most recent immersed-cannot-put-the-book-down read. Hope it helps ππ
