"The right to read out loud." Gotta disagree with this one. It's very easy to think of cases where it's rude or inconsiderate to read out loud. It's like listening to music without headphones on the transit.

"...rights are limited freedoms which are supposed to be guaranteed by governments"? I mean, I think Englightenment-era thinkers certainly didn't talk about rights in this way, nor does the US Constitution. Nevermind more recent stuff, like Roosevelt's "second bill of rights".

Hello, I am new to this subreddit. I've always tried to get into reading but never found my fav genre. In past years I tried to read something but could evaluate my accurate preference so pls help.
So till now, I have read at least 5-7 books by Sudha Murthy. She's my fav author and I like how she engages in stories. The majority of her books contain 17-25 short stories based on her life events and in parallel to the story engage opinions of her own and her surroundings. What I like about her reading is I can relate to her emotions and understand also the books are easy to read for me.
So now u must have figured out what I mean. Pls leave recommendations accordingly I'm open to mystery, real-life kinda genre and an easy read

I mean, are you complaining about spoilers in 100+ year old novels like Jane Eyre or some shit? I get that having an unspoiled story is nice but if that's the case then you really cannot expect all of society to just stop discussing pretty widely disseminated stories just because you haven't gotten there yet.
(Obvi does not apply to spoiling recent works.)

Absolutely, no movie is ever quite as good as the book, but I thought that version was pretty good. Malkovich does a great job as Lenny.

Reply to Thriller books used to be an entertaining palate-cleanser for me. Now I can't get past the halfway point. by nickjg613
I've read a lot of mystery/thrillers over the years (I even run a mystery/thriller book club) and have found that I can predict a lot of what is going to happen. I have found myself going in with low expectations and will get a three to four star out of the book that way. If I go in anticipating loving it, I'll hate it. There are also certain writers in the genre that I avoid because I just don't like their writing. My co-book club lead and I have been adding other types of mystery books (fantasy, cozy, romance, sci-fi), horror and true crime to our monthly polls so we can keep our participants interested. It's been a good way to stay in the mystery genre but also branch out a bit more.

Agreed. And, while the intent may have been lighthearted, I've met people who took "reader's rights" very seriously--seriously enough to invoke them constantly and without a trace of humor. My response to those folks is this Goodreads blog post, "A Review of the Reviewers": https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/9051535-a-review-of-the-reviewers

Several years ago an AI wrote a truly magical HP-inspired fanfiction called 'The Handsome One'. It's .. interesting.
I think authors are safe for a while longer.

I had to read it at least twice for school, but I think it was one of the few books I was forced to read that I actually liked. We also had to watch the movie version with Gary Sinese and John Malkovich.
One year we did a unit on banned books and had to write an essay arguing why they shouldn't be banned. Apparently some schools banned Of Mice and Men because they thought it promoted a lazy, anti-work attitude.

Thrillers really bore me lately. So many rely on really gory and weird crimes and the person in charge of solving that crime is always fucked up on a personal level but somehow still manages to get the job done brilliantly when no one else can ...
I'm going to clear out my TBR shelves soon and a lot of thrillers will go back to the free book places. I'd rather re-read my Sherlock Holmes collection than try out one of these.

I’ve just started The Black Dahlia (good so far) but I agree. His writing was def a bit more stylistic with American tabloid.

I just commented on this somewhere yesterday. I think this was one of his books he wrote while completely shitfaced. I tried for a year to read this and don't even remember if I finished it. His rants in this are just boring and go nowhere.

I have read the same little book once a year for the last 30 years. Just a fantasy entitled The Blue Sword. Over my last 74 years I've read thousands of books and I've read many, many books more than once. It's spending time with old, dear friends.

I imagined her as roughly the same "age" as Josie but maybe a bit smaller stature for some reason. There's nothing that suggested to me she was trying to "blend in" and hide the fact she is a robot. As for her mom using her to carry on for Josie - I figured the mannerisms, her walk, speech pattern, etc were more important than her physical resemblance but now you've got me wondering if she would actually be more physically like Josie than I imagined. Hmm...

Thats an odd one to parse. The first time I read something like that was let the right one in.
Its interesting that people only seem to discuss one of the pedophiles in the book.

Can anyone recommend me a book that is about how modern europe left traditional conservative values and adopted liberal progressive values . It can be about historical accounts such as French revolution. It could be about the enlightenment period . Suggestions ?
