Abuse, cruelty, dystopia, suffering a disease

It's redeeming feature is that it is only an hour and 45 minutes. Couldn't stand it. TBF I am not a big fan of those noir films anyway. I much prefer movies like the long goodbye that almost parody the genre and end up being great. I haven't watched murder my dear but I hate that they changed the name from farewell my lovely which is clearly the superior name.

Now you're just taking crazy. Maltese falcon is an incredible movie. One of the best noir films ever

Animal abuse. I could not get through Black Beauty and I do not like that cruelty towards cats shows up in a lot of critically acclaimed books.

Charlie is definitely underrated and living proof that our protagonists are far from the coolest in that world.

I wouldn't call it a struggle, more that I just don't tend to put the effort into looking outside my preferred SF&F genre. Not to say that I haven't read novels from other genres, nor that I refuse to, just that there is so much within that genre, that I don't feel much need to branch out.

I'm not by any means an expert, but I've read a few versions of Inferno. My favourite is easily the translation by Robert Pinsky, published in the late 90s.
He's a poet, as well as a translator, and he did an excellent job of capturing the essence of Inferno while making it much more accessible to a modern audience of more casual readers.

Many writers used letters as a literary outlet, some used them as a literary device.

SoG2 was my first thought when I saw this thread. Yes I know he's released Early Riser and The Constant Rabbit and the entire Dragonslayer series and a couple of Thursday Next books in the meantime, they've all been good-to-brilliant and done an OK job of keeping me satisfied.. But boy am I ready for that Shades of Grey sequel.

I read like crazy as a kid, slowed down in high school and all together stopped in college. I just couldn’t focus, and I REALLY tried, I’d be crying from the frustration. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year and I’ve been medicated for about 8 months. I’ve read 8 books so far this year, the diagnosis really changed my life.
You really should speak to a medical professional. There are a myriad of reasons you could be having issues focusing, but anything effecting you to this degree needs to be looked at.

Thinking back, it does make sense that her childlike written voice wouldn't have reflected an adult-appearing model meant as an AF. Maybe if AFs were designed more as babysitters, it'd be plausible.
I must have missed/forgotten the height mentions. Your take on Josie's eventual height definitely puts things into perspective. Thanks!

They don’t need that perception.
They price what the market will bear for the different versions.

It's probably cheaper than a lot of adult coloring books to when you think about how many pictures are in 1 coloring book

50 might be a lot for someone who doesn't read - you're talking 1 book a week for the next year.
Find ways to incorporate books into the things you already do. Going out to lunch? Take a book. Doing the dishes or walking the dog? Put in an audiobook. Long drive or casual video game? Audiobook

"based on" means exaggerated, changed, tweaked at the writer's whim. it's not a report it's an entertainment, using somebody's pain and horror for entertainment.
You don't need to read it. Try one of the gazillion other books out there waiting for you!

Dystopian books are a big no for me, my anxiety goes immediately through the roof. For this reason I can't read Corman McCarthy, some things by Philip K Dick and some science fiction. The only one I read ans loved was Stephen King's The Stand, but I was very young and didn't have anxiety issues.

Since becoming a parent, I cannot read (or consume other media) about children dying or child abuse.

Last year my goal was to read genres that didn't normally make it to my TBR pile. I did 2 things, first I selected 6 fiction and 6 nonfiction genres with the goal of reading 2 books from each and I joined an online book community that had a genre of the month challenge.
I planned to finish each of the books I started, but by Spring I decided not to torture myself. I had slogged through a few classics and it was making reading not fun.
My goal was to explore and get a taste of other types of books, I found a few authors I really enjoy, and I found a few genres that I will seek out. I learned that there is a lot of variety within most genres and how to pick up clues from the book descriptions to increase the chances of choosing a book that won't annoy me.
I still read many books from my favorite genres, but mix in a variety of other genres.

I had the same thing with Mists of Avalon (not the book itself, the author). I just threw it in the trash.
