I'd have to agree with wanton animal abuse, most animals are too big to fit into a wanton wrapper anyway, so don't force them! : ? uh, whut?
Actually I tried reading Aron Beauregard's novel "the Slob," but had to quit about halfway through. I can stomach most anything, but really it just goes too far into gruesome bloody gore and forced self-cannibalism.
I don't really enjoy torture or gore as forms of entertainment. I do consider myself a bonafide horror afficionado (I mean I've read everything Poe and Lovecraft have ever written, including some stories of H.P. that haven't been in print for ages).
And nearly 100% of my reading and movie watching is horror related. So, just because it's part of the genre, unfortunately there's a lot of denigrating torture and gore but that isn't at all interesting to me. It can make you sick (anyone actually make it through "the Slob"??) but that isn't entertainment to me. And not something I'd ever seek out.
And it isn't really lasting, the way something that creeps up on you and grabs your spine can be (Umm not for a snack, that is). Give me atmospheric terror (a little gore is OK - I love "the Thing," and it wouldn't work without it).

If you enjoyed Decameron check autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini. XVI century Italy, art, murders (Cellini was quite hot tempered) and romances with both man and woman (homosexual ones of course only hinted). Fascinating book.

I've had some books that I read at exactly the right time in my life to make them mean that much more. It's a special bond to have with a book like that.

Yeah at the end of the day it's your own preference I was just wondering why it was the norm.

I think it’s more that it was clearly inadvertently spoiled by a poor publishing decision. You can debate the nature of a “spoiler” but either way there is no way the author intended this. Would you agree?

Keep it simple. 1 star= ugh...wish 0 stars were an option. 2 stars= meh, 3 stars = OK, I guess, 4 stars = that's good, would read again, 5 stars = perfection
I suppose, I could break it down farther, but that's enough for me.

The idea of being stuck on a boat is my fear rather than tremoring at the idea of exploitative migrant labor.
I've never been a bit fan of this mindset though: "You were emotionally affected by learning about industry malpractices? Better stay purposely ignorant of other industries shading doings"
Yes, reading about how big businesses operate is like staring into oblivion but it's important to stay informed.

Unless people use .25 in a 5 point rating it is isn't it?

I often feel this way finishing books! Especially if the world is really immersive, I never want to leave it. But I try to focus on the fun of freeing up space to explore other awesome book worlds and characters, and then dive into my next read and hope it gives me the same feeling as well.

Statistically your going to get to the same place with 5 or 10. People think their ratings are more nuanced/fine tuned than they really are. The following is more than sufficient for most...
- 1 = Hated it
- 3 = It was OK
- 5 = Loved it

What about 7.5 do people use 3.25? Genuinely curious.

I go with 5 because it is so prevalent and achieve the same as you by using decimals eg 3.5

Good for you, but that doesn't make the people who want more extensive discussion a "pedantic ass" just because they think the distinction is relevant.

Yet the, amazon owned, goodreads rating guide translates, 2 as ok, 3 as good, 4 as very good, and 5 as amazing.
But, yeah - a 3 feels a bit luke warm when you're looking for 4-5s typically.

Bittersweet for sure. Extremely satisfied with how the authors wrapped up the series but like I mentioned above, it was hard to say goodbye to all those great characters
