agree, that's the only way I was able to start understanding stuff like author subtext, theming, the stuff that "isn't written" per se.

Very odd that you've had to pay to loan books out from your library.

That’s awesome. The only thing I caution is reading by low light under the covers can do eye strain damage. My wife’s family has perfect vision mostly but my wife, who did exactly what you son did, for like 10 years, has such terrible vision her contact prescription is like -11 or something insane.
Maybe if he’s gonna stay up reading he can turn the overhead lights on or something? Just a word of caution - congrats on getting that love of reading instilled. My wife is incredibly successful and it’s definitely due to her incredibly voracious reading abilities so I’m not trying to scare you away from supporting your sons books books books mentality.

Self-help books are usually out there to make money, rather than to inform. Textbooks or published research would have more up-to-date and accepted knowledge.
I'd caution trying to get super knowledgeable about something you don't need to as well. Some things, like eating healthy, are actually quite simple and would take a few sentences to explain about counting calories, and hitting macros. What use would more information be after that? You follow the basics, you're healthy. Unless you're trying to apply this in a professional setting where it's part of your job to stay up to date on the most recent research, you might be using these books as a way to feel like you're making progress on a goal.
Similar for fitness, there's really some basic advice you can get from a place like the CDC or WHO on exercise.
Psychology really can be a minefield - you aren't out there getting your doctorate, you aren't going to be practicing, so what are you trying to learn? How to make friends?
So yeah, while research and textbooks will provide up to date, or comprehensive knowledge, be aware you might not even need that much. And if you do need that much, well, you should already have those resources available from your university or employer. Other than that, self-help is helping their self to your money with repackaged basic info you can find online.

I personally liked "The Boys from Biloxi." There was probably a good bit of truth and history woven into the pages. If you remember History from school you know how BORING it can be coming straight out of a text book. I liked History and considered a Degree in it but it was still BORING for the most part.

I recently read and LOVED Lessons in Chemistry. But the cover was such a turn off I almost didn’t- it looks like an awful chick-lit beach read, and it’s actually an excellent and well written book full of outstanding characters, humor, lots of science and a great plot. I’ve been recommending it to others, but always feel I have to give a warning about the cover and not to judge by it. One of the most egregious graphic design fails I’ve seen I think.

>Only if you exclude their second paragraph.
No, including the second paragraph. The author never makes any money from resells or the used book market.
>They acknowledge the author only gets paid once, but that is better than zero.
But not as good as "every sale", which is what publishers want.
>The resale market is not the same as the piracy market.
According to other people crying about the money authors aren't making (ie, publishers), it totally is

Damn, this book must have hit hard for you. Sometimes you just find the right thing at the right time. That’s awesome.

Thank you, we definitely have our flaws as parents, as all parents do, but one thing we love is how must trust we have built with our son and its the #1 thing we strive to maintain.

Pretty recently (and with much media coverage) Woody Allen's memoir was canceled after significant internal and public backlash. I suppose it's an example of being both social-media canceled and actually *canceled*. https://time.com/5798335/woody-allen-memoir-canceled/

If you have a kindle, I would suggest reading through the daily kindle deals emails. I’ve found some great series and authors that way with buying a older book for $1-3. Then I go a pay full price for their other books. It’s also helped me be able to abandon a book I didn’t like. I was usually powering through books I didn’t really care for because I spent $15-20 and just didn’t want to waste it.

I can’t stress how important is to read the genre you like.
I was really big on fantasy in my teenage years but fell off reading. I decided to get back into fantasy by following some recommendations and started reading Licanius trilogy by James Islington. After two chonkers of books filled with names generated by a cat walking across the keyboard and chapters of exposition dump I almost felt like reading is not for me.
Then I decided to give The Road by Cormac McCarthy a shot and now it looks like I’m only reading modern dramatic fiction. I’m 4 books ahead of my yearly schedule.

How Opal Mehta Got Kissed - a planned YA book about an Indian-American girl who tries to become a more “typical” teen to look more well-rounded for college applications. Got a 6-figure advance (the author had only just graduated college I think) and it was supposed to be a more diverse take on Gossip Girl and other reigning YA fiction of the day. Turns out the whole thing was plagiarised, tons of passages ripped straight from other books in the genre (Princess Diaries etc). All copies were recalled and destroyed! I remember being in middle school when this happened, the author grew up locally to me and it was mentioned quite a bit in teacher lectures about plagiarism.

Displaced by Michael Cooper (Elizabeth Gilbert's first ex) was to be released by Hyperion at the same time that the movie "Eat Pray Love" was released. It quietly disappeared.
