Thanks, but it's you deserves all the credit. (Though I must say I'm rather pleased with 'sighed defiantly'.)
I can tell you exactly what a flanchion is. It's a word on a wiki list of medieval swords.

Yeah, it‘s more about that feeling of existential dread and absolute loss of control and understanding when it comes to what‘s out there, not about spaceships and aliens.
At its very best, this kind of horror gives me a feeling of insane unease about the fact that there are things out there that could wipe us out in a matter of seconds without us ever understanding why or how. That includes alien forms, but also lots of other cosmic occurances

When i finished the millennium trilogy (girl with a dragon tattoo, the girl who played with fire, the girl who kicked the hornet's nest) knowing that the author had passed away after he finished them i got depressed knowing that these characters wouldn't be coming back because of that. Also, because Stieg Larsson didn't live to see what a big success his books would be.
I know that recently other authors have written sequels to the trilogy but i haven't read them.

I used to hate them too but they’ve kind of grown on me. It’s like a little secret that the misleading cover contains within it. What do you think of the newer covers? I think they’re nice, trendy and eye catching. I love the little girl on the cover of MBF bc she actually looks like my childhood best friend.

Yes! They messed up the characters in the film too – three men condensed into one Eben Ramsey, Juliet being all fluttery, giggly and eager to please unlike in the book where she calls lightheartedness one step away from witless, how the Society wasn't welcoming of Juliet whereas in the book they all got to know Juliet, not just Dawsey, and how Isola flung herself on Juliet and kissed her upon arrival.
However I think Jessica Brown Findlay portrayed Elizabeth really well. But Kit — she's this blond, average, boring but cute six year old without any of book Kit's charisma. And Amelia! What happened?! I also hated how Mark was this nice guy willing to help her instead of that selfish control freak of the book.

THERE IS EXACTLY THAT!! AO3 ARCHIVES OF OUR OWN !!!
Its literally a website for fanfiction and fanfiction writers. People go there to read and write fanfictions about hundreds of Fandoms (all types of media works.) Plus, it had a detailed and very convenient RESEARCH MODE! Like you can literally tell AO3 what you want to include and exclude from the works you're looking for about the Fandom you like and even the characters you like. I mean that's what you're looking for man. It's the missing link between you and ''reading''
Warning ⚠️: it is highly addictive 😂

YES!!! Even if the protagonist doesn't have the most ideal life or circumstances I just want them to be my friend...like, I often felt like this after reading Sally Rooney or books that are very character-driven. It's like I MISS THEM

Which also just a heads up for those who like to own physical copies, the same boon is also called Unto Leavithan.
Ship of Fools has recently only been printed in mass market, trying to get a regular paperback is upwards of like $100. Unto Leavithan however has regular papers backs in $20-30 range.

I loved it too. It sort of fell apart at the end and felt rather unfinished, but for the most part, I enjoyed it a great deal. The movie, not so much, but probably for the same reason...they tried to make up for the weak finish, and screwed it up even worse!

Dragon blood series has romance from both perspectives and with more than one couple actually. Listened first 3 books out of 8 so far. Dragon blood has a rare spin in fantasy as it takes place in a universe with similar technology with end of 1800 start of 1900 with some real technologies replaced by magical techniques.

Expecting 21st century societal norms in books not written in the 21st century always seemed weird to me.

Yeah, but more of them are both 30+ spouses on their first marriage now too.
It’s less the age gap itself I’m worried about and more the legality of child marriage in “developed” parts of the world still on the books.

It reminds me of corporate website clip art. A lot of newer US romance covers are like that and its so ugly and uninspired.

Blindsight!!! It really opened this genre up for me. The space setting is often really just a tool of writers trying to express the alienness of our place in the universe, reality and our consciousness.

I recommend besides her Emily books and Anne of Green Gables, of course, reading her personal journals. They are extremely interesting and show how dramatically society changed during that period. I checked them out from a university library.

It was published in 1931, wasn't it? Kinda hard to judge someone for diction choices made over 90 years ago. I wonder what derogatory but presently acceptable words we use will be regarded as terrible slurs in 2100.

I think this question deserves it's own thread.
Personally, I read the book before watching the movie, or read the book and never watch the movie, or watch the movie but never read the book, but what I don't like is reading the book after watchig the movie. Usually when I read a book it feels like the things are happening to me, but when I watch a movie I feels like the things are happening to someone else and I'm just there on the sideline. When reading the book after watching the movie I can't get into it the way I'm used to.
But I've seen many people say that when they read a book it also feels like they're watching a movie, and in that case I think the order wouldn't matter.
