When I was little, I literally cried because of this feeling. When I finished Harry Potter, I cried because I could never see MORE of that world, of those characters. Seriously, how our minds make us care so much about things that don't really exist? I cried because I feel longing for something that never existed. This is crazy.

Dark Erotic Fiction with LGBTQ+ and BDSM Themes - The Mistress and Masters of Restraint series by Erica Chilson will blow you away with it's family saga. This is a long and heavy read that will leave you drained but inspired.

Splatter Gore with a bit of humor - Tim Shaw "How Much To" Series

Bombur from The Hobbit looks just like the Spirit of Christmas Present from Muppet Christmas Carol, just dwarf-sized. Which is less far-fetched than you might think, because SCP shifts size from too large for a room to comfortably in the room, to at one point the size of a mouse.

If you told me you read it and later I found out these shocking details I would not be shocked and be okay. If you said you read it all or such then I'd feel it was misrepresented ... in the hypothetical universe where anything like this conversation takes place.

>what is it about a book cover that attracts you to pick up a copy of a book by an unknown author?

That rarely happens. However, the Bill Gregory cover illustration of Laura Joh Rowland's Shinju did attract my attention. It is a medieval Japanese style drawing of what looks to be a parade over a bridge with a city scene in the mid ground and a snow tipped mountain in the background (although it may just be a busy bridge, upon closer inspection).

That did not lead me to buy the book, it led me to read the back cover blurb, which did lead me to buy the book by an unknown to me author.

Interestingly, there are a number of other editions of that book with different covers. If I had come across one of those other editions I would not have read the back cover blurb and would not have bought the book.

My favorite book is up to 600 so I guess it no longer qualifies.

But for a hidden gem with fewer reviews, I will say "Because of You" by Lisa Walker. It only has 17 ratings on goodreads and is no longer in print. It follows the story of a girl from childhood into her early 20s, as she deals with a dysfunctional family and dysfunctional relationships. There are some interesting thoughts and observations that she offers along the way. I read it as a teenager when it came out, and I'd still consider it one of my all time favorites.

I just have to say what an amazing idea this is! It has Never occurred to me to ask about book stores in an area that I'm about to travel to. This is going on my list of things to do when I make travel plans.

Edit: Also, now I REALLY want to visit London!

my annual goal is both books and pages. so i count the short story collection as read, even if i did not read all of the stories, but i mark the page amount as a % of the stories read. so if i read 12 of 20 stories and the whole book is 700 pages. i 700/20*12 and list that number.

counting pages keeps me from choosing short books just to meet the goal.

but ultimately it is up to you and what you feel comfortable doing.

I have no problem with other writers taking over characters & writing duties, it's just that sometimes that doesn't work out.

You just need to find somebody who is a fan of the original and understands the characters and respects both.
