It's been a long time since I've read all of those titles, but your recommendations look like my childhood reading list when I would spend long hours in the library going through the adults' section of fiction and science fiction. I don't know if I'll have the same fondness for those authors if I decided to re-read them again. They left a crater impact on my imagination for the hungry reader I was.

Your subjective opinion is valid. As are everyone else's. A lot of people may like that book. It's okay that you don't. Doesn't mean it's objectively bad. Doesn't mean that your wrong. It's just not for you, and you can choose to be satisfied by moving on to another book you might enjoy.

Reading a non-fiction book is also a different experience to reading a fiction book. Actual research has shown that reading a physical or print book and listening to an audiobook activates the same regions of the brain and has similar retention. So it is indeed reading. That is the opinion of actual experts. Including librarians such as myself. So maybe accept that you aren't the sole arbitrator of what reading is.
Narration enhancing certain books doesn't mean that it is no longer reading any more than a teacher reading books to children at story time means that the books are suddenly no longer the same. It is the same text being experienced. The mode of experience may be different but that is also true in print versus ebook format or in standard font versus large print or in books written in Braille rather than standard print.
Nothing you said could squelch my joy since I am an actual expert rather than speaking with obvious ignorance as you did.
Clearly you have nothing intelligent to say on this subject, so I will converse with you no longer.

It's real cool how suspension of disbelief allows you to accept "gods are just here now" more readily than "brown people live here".

Sometimes it be like that. Time to find another book. As long as you're not expecting people to cater to your exact wants, that's fine. People are free to write how they wish, and you are free to choose what you want to read.

Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman is a great book. I'm sure there are others.
Edit: I just saw that it's #1 on the list linked to in the other comment. I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoyed it.

Only a minority of hens have the broody instinct from what I can tell. Furthermore unless you have roosters, the eggs are infertile anyway. Calling it irresponsible to take the eggs is a joke.

What? Dickens, Steinbeck, Tolstoy, Achibe, Toni Morrison were all social commentators as much as wordsmith. Fitzgerald may have been less concerned with commentary than some, but he definitely had a viewpoint.

I think we found the vegan that ruins it for all the other ones. This is a post in r/books, for God’s sake, and the discussion is utterly derailed. Way to poop the party.

Estate sales are definitely a good place for books because people are just tossing the whole library and books aren't particularly valuable used, so they are moving about as cheap as they can.

Idk what you’re getting downvoted for, I love chickens and this is absolutely true. They’re violent little dinosaurs. It’s great.

Depends on the story. In LoTR wizards are essentially gods who are embodied to help in the fight against Sauron. Dragons were bred in ancient times to help fight wars.

Sayers was probably the most "literary" of the four, while Allingham had the best sense of humor. All four have had excellent TV dramatizations of their work (e.g. The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries (Marsh), Campion (Allingham), and Lord Peter Wimsey (Sayers)).

It can be frustrating to invest time and effort into a book only to find that it didn't meet our expectations, but everyone's tastes and preferences are different. Just because a book didn't resonate with us doesn't necessarily mean that it's not a good book. Taking a break from reading for a bit or trying a different genre might help reignite your love for reading. And who knows, maybe you'll stumble upon a hidden gem that becomes your new favorite book. Keep exploring and happy reading!"
