It may reassure you to read the American Library Association Code of Ethics, by which public libraries abide. Therein you can read that libraries following said code strive, as organizations, to be as apolitical and neutral as possible. Their only goal is to make all viewpoints available to all people, so that those people can make informed decisions on their own on whatever they choose to access.

You say this like Ellman was responsible for making the book famous. Take issue with critics and the literary establishment, not Ducks. I think the book is mediocre and flat, failing where The Pale King's fragments succeeded over a decade ago, but she definitely tapped into something that some group of people found valuable, and you can't call that an unmitigated failure of her alone.

I believe that fungus by the way makes colonies near the brain and muscles, so the ant stays cognisant (as cognisant as an ant) the entire time. The brain is fine and can only watch the body kill itself.

If it wasn't for the St. Louis Public Library system I wouldn't have the love and admiration I have for libraries today. They were a wonderful respit for a child living a chaotic life and one of the very few options for my disabled aunt to give me a form of community and structure. This is simply horrifying to hear and my heart hurts for every child in Missouri.

This was a relatively well thought out response. And the last two paragraphs make a compelling argument.

Two points:

  1. I didn't make any judgments on audiobooks. I only stated my opinion that they are different and it's actually quite confusing to me that it was interpreted by multiple people that I was somehow implying they're inferior when I explicitly stated that I wasn't judging people who listen to audiobooks.
  2. This isn't r/stories, and movies also tell the same stories, but nobody suggests that watching movies are the same as reading (although I can imagine there are discussions here about movie adaptations, and that I can see where there could be a place for that softens my opinion even more). The fact that there is an r/audiobooks for the discussion of specifically audiobooks is great. I wish there was a thing like that for....books...that are read with eyes. I would have assumed that should be r/books. (Which is also why I conceded that I would also accept a separate r/booksyoureadwithyoureyes.)

The reason you couldn't tell whether I've listened to audiobooks is because it didn't at all matter with regards to the point I was making. I have listened to a few audiobooks and enjoyed them. At least one of them I did go back and forth between reading and listening while on a road trip. A couple I have both listened to and read separately and it was just a completely different experience both times.

It's unfortunately become clear to me that when people say, "omg you have to read this book. It's awesome. I just finished listening to the audiobook." I have to immediately discard it because many books really are just a lot better in audiobook format. (Which makes how offended everyone got assuming I was somehow belittling audiobooks even more ridiculous.) I just wish it was clearer: "hey, I just listened to a great audiobook and I think everyone should give it a listen" would be a better way to put it. A great audiobook often does not mean a great book and vice versa.

I appreciate the discussion (though your response would have been better received without the first paragraph).

If you have the means to read using Hoopla, Librista or any of the other myriad apps libraries use for eBooks, there's very little stopping you from being able to procure an out of county library card from a library in another state to use their digital services. I myself am a librarian and we do have patrons who are out of the area and just use those services... we charge $15/year in out of county fees at my library, but the amount varies.

When I worked in library, the only people pushing sex into children's hands were zealots. They actively reshelved inappropriate items in the children's section so they'd be found and create an uproar. We knew who they were and would just go around behind them and remove the items. Can you imagine the thought process? Truly thinking you were doing good work?

I like romances. I'm straight. I like reading "smutty" romances.

I don't like it when they start banging within the first couple chapters, and I'd prefer it take even longer so I can feel invested in their relationship.

That being said, "erotica" is extremely popular and it's basically the book version of "porn with almost a sort of story to excuse the porn". It sounds like you found some erotica.

Sadly, these days almost all "romance" is erotica. It's hard to find real romances.

Seems like Detective Dick arrived with the pizza delivery early in that "detective thriller," lmao.

Or maybe he "dropped off a package". 🤣

Dorian Gray I didn't discover until a few years ago. I blazed through it how much I liked it. The transformations of Dorian's soul on a canvas is fantastic stuff.

Imagine if someone made a video game based on this idea. You put your soul on a canvas and throughout the game your choices reflect the good or bad endings you get from your actions. Add some horror elements to it. Maybe throw in some other people who made similar deals as Dorian. Maybe a boss fight with yourself since you are battling your conscience and desires. Just a thought.

That was exactly my point. There is an r/audiobooks. And there is not an r/booksyoureadwithyoureyes.
The discussion I was not interested in is "Are audiobooks better/worse than print or ebooks?" (Which is basically what the FAQ thread is).
I will admit that based on the responses I got, it was just going to turn into that argument, but I was actually interested in others' opinions. And I don't actually know of a subreddit that is better suited for such a discussion.

I'm dismayed you disagree.
