You aren't forced. You are free to leave the country at any time.
You are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. Libraries are a good thing, and the only people that think otherwise are people that don't like an educated populace, or people that don't like people getting for free something that they could be making money off of.
Stop trying to privatize everything.

What does "defund" even mean? And how will this defunding actually affect the operating budget of all libraries in the state?

Unfortunately there is cost and even worse that cost is forced rather than paid voluntarily.

Wow, if only we had a place where people could go to borrow books for no cost

I’ve written to a few authors - well known in their genre but not mega stars like Stephen king or jk Rowling. They all wrote back to me and somewhere in our email exchange they said they don’t get many emails ( which surprised me. They get plenty of reviews and press coverage.) in my email I just expressed specific things they wrote and how it impacted my life and thanked them for writing the book. Brief exchanges, we didn’t become pen pals or friends or anything but they were all very kind.

No it wouldn’t. The example you’re looking for would be akin to Blockbuster or Netflix. But there would certainly be different models in the market with different pricing structures including no cost options

No, rights are not created by humans or government. The government most certainly does silence speech and censors. You have zero sway over the government and more sway as a consumer in the market as businesses succeed or fail based on reaction to market signals snd indicators.

Many publishers have a mailing address for their authors for fan mail. If you can't find one, you could just mail it directly to the publisher's address, addressed to the author, In Care of: Publisher's Name.

It’s not antithetical to the “idea” of libraries at all. Of course privately-owned libraries would be profit driven but public libraries don’t provide needs, the services are wants. You assume that some of these wants wouldn’t be offered at no cost to the customer or that there wouldn’t be “inexpensive access.” You assume that there wouldn’t be non-profit models, charitable models, or donation-based models. The beauty of the market is that opportunity exists to meet various wants.
Food is a need, so why not have the government take over grocery stores instead? I think you’d agree that would be a terrible idea.

I’m honestly think the whole anti trans agenda in libraries is just a made up excuse to defund them so people (especially older people who tend to frequent libraries) won’t blow a gasket as they all begin to close. The government, rather than just saying, “most people are moving to digital”, feel they need an excuse, which is so much worse than just leveling with folks.

The newest budget defunded all libraries as retaliation for aclu suing them on the previous law.

I have, and I'm glad because they've since passed away. As a writer myself, I understand how much time and energy goes into writing a story. Having someone tell me they enjoy my writing and that it moved them makes me feel great, and I'm not even published. So I wanted them to know their impact on me. They were very kind and we had lovely exchanges.

I've only read Agnes Grey, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and Jane Eyre.
I liked them all but Tenant is my absolute favorite. I wish they taught it more in school. It's so relevant today and so important. The way Helen just walks by all these red flags and married Arthur is chilling. The middle part I read as fast as I can just to get her out!
I wish that book was more popular!

If you struggle, an advice I got was to read the end and come back to the point where you stopped later.
People who know the end of a book are more likely to finish it.

A letter need to know their adress though, I assume most authors don't publically share their adress for obvious reasons

Yeah I think most author like that very much especially smaller ones. Of course, if it's a Stephen King type author, I doubt they even read fan mail anymore considering how much they probably receive. But you can probably still write, just know it'll not be read (or read and answered by assistants).

Hi. My post was automatically deleted, so I'll try to ask my question here. Hope it's ok.
I've used Goodreads for years but now I'm looking for an alternative. I need a book API for my new service but Goodreads doesn't issue new keys to developers and is planning to close the service.
I wonder what is the best alternative to Goodreads? I only need the ability to add books to shelves and use their API.

I love when I get fan mail. Usually email is best, I keep my actual address private for obvious reasons and a PO Box is a bit of a hassle. I always respond, too, but sometimes it takes me a while.

Look for local library sales. Very often on the last day of the sale they will have a special where you can fill a bag for $5.
