I enjoyed the Sympathizer, partly because of the creative metaphors he uses and his lyrical descriptions. I wouldn't call it purple at all. It's not exactly window pane prose, but his meaning is clear, not confusing.

What is considered good writing has changed over time. But for me, the Sympathizer is well within modern standards for good writing.

Edit, for anyone considering reading the book, some of the content is brutal.

I quit reading the fellowship about 5/6 through it because I was bored.

Got the audiobooks and flew through the trilogy.

Fellowship is just slow. The other books probably wouldn't have been as bad, but...

LMAO, are you deliberately farming downvotes or something?

If you don't like a book, why read it for pleasure?

But moreover, why do you care so much what others think? If you enjoy reading novels by skipping every other page.... Why should anyone else care?

If I skim through a book, I won’t consider it read. If I read the summary through a wiki article OR online notes, I also have not read it.

If I’m reading for pleasure, I should be enjoying reading the book as a whole—if I skip chapters or skim it: that book would have not been very good for me and I won’t finish reading it. And I won’t put it on my list of read books. I’ll just pick another until I find one that can keep me entertained through and through.

I completely skim when I revisit my favorites though. Especially when I just want to go back to a particular part.

I agree with the audiobook. It helps me read a lot, and I listen to it while working.

To help you get into the reading habit, try following the audiobook and read the text. Or just lay down in bed and relax. Don't pressure yourself to do it. Take it a chapter at a time or pages at a time.

Also, if you want to know if you like audiobooks, you can try netgalley. They have fun audiobook selections, too.😊

Project Hail Mary - it’s always getting so much hype so I thought I’d enjoy it. The plot is interesting for sure, but Andy Weir’s writing is pretty awful and his characters are one-dimensional at best. If you want a storyline that moves along and you’re not too fussed about the improbable science, then go for it but maybe don’t spend your hard-earned dollars on it. It’s a good one to borrow from the library. (The audiobook and narrator also get a lot of love on Reddit but, once again, I didn’t love it. That being said, it was easier to listen to the audiobook than to read it. Don’t ask me why I tortured myself with both. Guess I was trying to understand why others loved it so much. To each his/her own, right?)
