Yes. The ever so offensive "let people enjoy things" shouldn't go unpunished, lmao.

Not listening to all the songs on an album, or not finishing a TV show, is in no way equivalent to "reading" a novel by skipping every other page.
That'd be like watching a movie by fast forwarding past certain scenes, or skipping the first minute of a song.

I enjoyed the Sympathizer, partly because of the creative metaphors he uses and his lyrical descriptions. I wouldn't call it purple at all. It's not exactly window pane prose, but his meaning is clear, not confusing.
What is considered good writing has changed over time. But for me, the Sympathizer is well within modern standards for good writing.
Edit, for anyone considering reading the book, some of the content is brutal.

I quit reading the fellowship about 5/6 through it because I was bored.
Got the audiobooks and flew through the trilogy.
Fellowship is just slow. The other books probably wouldn't have been as bad, but...

LMAO, are you deliberately farming downvotes or something?
If you don't like a book, why read it for pleasure?
But moreover, why do you care so much what others think? If you enjoy reading novels by skipping every other page.... Why should anyone else care?

The Silent Patient is possibly the worst book I’ve ever read

I read for myself for 20 minutes at bedtime. I also have the kindle app on my phone, so if I am in line or waiting for a bus, I can read. Some people use audiobooks while working out or doing household chores.

Why go to the park or fly a kite when you can just pop a pill?

Ok, but what "people"? Because what's very difficult for a reader may not be difficult at all for a different reader.

Yeah. I don't think Matt Damon was a good casting choice. Doesn't capture the narrator's energy.

I will never understand. I read two of her books and thought they were absolutely ridiculous and unsatisfactory.

If I skim through a book, I won’t consider it read. If I read the summary through a wiki article OR online notes, I also have not read it.
If I’m reading for pleasure, I should be enjoying reading the book as a whole—if I skip chapters or skim it: that book would have not been very good for me and I won’t finish reading it. And I won’t put it on my list of read books. I’ll just pick another until I find one that can keep me entertained through and through.
I completely skim when I revisit my favorites though. Especially when I just want to go back to a particular part.

Oh Project Hail Mary was sooooo good! I didn't think anything would top The Martian for a while but that did the trick. Thought about that book for days after I was finished.

I agree with the audiobook. It helps me read a lot, and I listen to it while working.
To help you get into the reading habit, try following the audiobook and read the text. Or just lay down in bed and relax. Don't pressure yourself to do it. Take it a chapter at a time or pages at a time.
Also, if you want to know if you like audiobooks, you can try netgalley. They have fun audiobook selections, too.😊

Absolutely. I read the book first but in general, books tend to have so much more detail not captured in movies.

Project Hail Mary - it’s always getting so much hype so I thought I’d enjoy it. The plot is interesting for sure, but Andy Weir’s writing is pretty awful and his characters are one-dimensional at best. If you want a storyline that moves along and you’re not too fussed about the improbable science, then go for it but maybe don’t spend your hard-earned dollars on it. It’s a good one to borrow from the library. (The audiobook and narrator also get a lot of love on Reddit but, once again, I didn’t love it. That being said, it was easier to listen to the audiobook than to read it. Don’t ask me why I tortured myself with both. Guess I was trying to understand why others loved it so much. To each his/her own, right?)

I’m reading it right now for the 2nd time the movie is extremely watered down version , it’s very detailed and has lots of science talk , but Andy weirs books are excellent, project Hail Mary is even better imo
