I've been living in Boston for 10 years, the last 5 without a car. For the most part I walk everywhere which means I've become pretty in tune with the state of pedestrian safety within the city.

Of course I've seen my fair share of bad driving over the years but over the last year, year and a half, I've seen just an incredible uptick in the number of drivers blowing through red lights.

Now I'm not talking about cars trying to make the last second of a yellow light, I mean cars that are blowing through lights that have long been red. Cars blowing through intersections when the pedestrian walk sign is on and people are already crossing the intersection.

This used to be something I saw every few months, now it's something I see almost every day. Today I saw a woman scream as she started crossing the intersection and a car sped up to blow through a red light that had been red for a solid 5 seconds.

What's going on?
