The way I always answer this question, is THE GAMES! You are buying a video game console, for one simple reason: to play video games. Check the exclusives catalog for both consoles and try and make a list of games that appeal to you on both sides. If one side has more games listed than the other, that's the one you should get.

A lot of Xbox One games (minus some exclusives) are on the PS4 as well. The PS5 is almost fully backwards compatible with PS4 games (physical and digital) that can be found super cheap, and it also plays newer PS5 games too.

So 400 bucks or not, you'll get way more mileage and value from the PS5 with access to 2 console libraries. Only, check if the price is legit. The PS5 is 550 new, and it's tough to find, so if this is true, it's a steal. If you prefer Xbox, the Series S and X will still give you more value than an Xbox One (again all the games from there are playable on the Series, plus some OG Xbox and 360 games).

The PS4 has lasted longer than the PS3 did when it comes to AAA games. But that's because the PS4 is Sony's second most succesful console after the PS2. And since the PS5 came out during the pandemic, it's still quite a bit hard to find, though less so over the last year. There are still some PS5 Exclusive games released (Ratched and Clank: Rift Apart, Demon's Souls Remake, Returnal), and upcoming ones (Spider-Man 2, Wolverine). So we'll get there.

Hardware wise, yes, absolutely. But the biggest major downgrade is that you cannot play physical games or resell any games from your library as they will all be digital on the Series S. There's also the fact that the PS exclusives are way better imo. Also the Series S is underpowered compared to the Series X or the PS5. So if any of this matters to you, I recommend getting the Series X if you want an Xbox, and the PS5 if you want to stick with Sony.

As someone who very recently upgraded from PS4 Pro to PS5, I can say the 5 is the best console I've ever owned and used so far (I've had a PS3 Slim and PS4 Pro in the past).

Bought a Nintendo Switch OLED, and the games they enjoyed the most as coop play.

#1 Kirby and the forgotten land. (Perfect game and they love playing it, but they shared on playing Kirby, the pink character)

#2 Super Mario 3D world. (Fun to play and they enjoy the game especially when we all play 4 coops)

#3 Luigi's Mansion 3. (They are very interested in this game, BUT it is more tricky to play especially with the button combos you have to do.) A bit frustrated during the 1 -2 hour play at singleplayer.

#4 Fall Guys. (They do like it, but got tired quickly as they barely ever got through the labyrinths/goals.)

#5 Mario Kart. (They do enjoy the game, but it's not a go-to game when they wanna play. Probably has the best multiplayer out of all the games as it's the only one so far that uses a split screen.)

#6 Bowsers Fury. (Caught their interest for a while.)

#7 Overcooked all-you-can-eat. (Chaos and almost impossible with two 5-year-olds sabotaging you and themselves.)

#8 Mine Craft. (Tried but not yet explored. No coop options.)

Other game suggestions?

If he has to pay $10 a month for gold to play online anyways then we are talking another $60 a year to have access to a TON of other good titles for the new xbox That's so worth it and barely anything.

Don't buy a new console for a sports game that comes out every year. Check if there are any other games that interest you on it in the long run. Otherwise it isn't worth it.
