Honestly, you have to look at the game libraries and functionalities, such as PlayStation VR and VR2. There are things that are only on one platform, and Xbox game pass is by far one of the best things on the market, but PlayStation now has a middle and high tier of membership that includes different game libraries, which has already saved me about $80 just for Christmas, compared to buying the game otherwise.

I have all three platforms for gaming, and I do most of my own on my computer. It can absolutely be worth it, but realistically I would have preferred to only have one, but console exclusives suck

If you have a PC capable of playing modern games, then PS5 (as well as Switch but realize you didn't ask that) have the most value as games are not available on those platforms for PC.

At least from my perspective, Xbox is best if its going to be main/only platform to play games (or your like me and like the backwards compatibility/enhancements) since its cost-effective.

FIFA 23 is already cross platform (has to be the same generation of consoles though) but looks like 2K won’t have this (may have something to do with Sony charging companies to allow for crossplay as revealed in the Epic vs Apple case) and Xbox already has Discord working on the platform. Either is a good choice but perhaps go with what your friends have.

Honestly (and this is coming from someone who owns a series s and doesn’t have a ps5) it sounds like the ps5 would be a better investment for you. Other than the storage option and the disk drive you would run into your same problems with friends ps parties and not playing those ps exclusives with the series x like you had with the s. This is again coming from someone with an Xbox but both are really just vessels for gamepass just one is better than the other. You can get gamepass on your pc so do that. Get yourself a shiny new ps5 and get your physicals, your exclusives and most importantly have fun with your friends my dude. Not financial advice

I was an Xbox fanboy and recently got the PS5. I do not dislike the Xbox as it is a fantastic console, however, I doubt I will ever go back to one. The Series X and PS5 are both insanely powerful consoles so you really cannot go wrong with either one. In your case, since your friends all have PS, I’d go with the PS5.
