Looking at sales figures, I'd say it is more likely it sold well because it had software people wanted at a lower price point than the rest of the industry. Also, there is some truth to the "kids" thing - which has long worked for Nintendo, and I don't know why that makes "seereeus gaymerz" so personally affronted by its success.

Mario Kart 8 alone has sold almost as much as the Xbox One! The majority of people buying it don't care about specs or graphics nearly as much as games they want to play.

I mean, the PS5 hasn't really had an exclusive killer app yet, 3 years into its life. The XBSX doesn't have exclusives at all due to Microsoft's new strategy. Gaming PC's are not exactly mass-market, though I suspect Valve's gambit may pay off over the mid-term if they can sell the concept to the non-enthusiast.

Even as an enthusiast, I probably play my Switch as much as my other consoles combined and about equal to my "PC's" (including the deck). It has games I want to play, and the portability is handy with a toddler in the house and living in a place where I take trains everywhere (Europe).

Refurbished from Gamestop is fine. I still have a refurbished Xbox One from like 2016. I never play it but it still works. Did not get, nor did I need, the additional coverage.

A base PS4 is a fine system but the PS4 Pro is much better, especially if you swap the hard drive with an SSD (really easy to do).

Whichever platform you go with, if it's within $100-$200 of PS5 w/ Disc Drive, I'd save up for the PS5.

The Switch is a great family console. I've played it quite a bit for BOW and a few other titles, but we primarily use it to all play mario party / kart together. I don't think you can really compare it to a ps/xbox, it's a handheld at the end of the day. Overall, great piece of kit.

It sounds like you just need a ps or xbox instead.

Yeah I've been getting down voted on this subreddit for recommending PC, but when someone says "I have a PS5 and I want to switch to xbox series x" what else am I supposed to say? I switched to PC in late 2019 and its just crazy that people don't want to switch, PC already has more features and games than the ps6 or next gen xbox are gonna have, it's a no brainer, it's also crazy cheap if you research, for some reason console players think PC costs 1500+ and that just isn't the case, you can build a preowned PC that has a rx 580 8gb for less than 500 or you could buy the ultimate rig for 2000, its all upto the user and that's your choice, on console you don't really have those kind of choices

Yeah I have a pretty similar rig, 6700xt and ryzen 7 3700, in my case I actually bought a steam deck to replace my switch (and Holy crap it's so much better) and I just believe getting a PS5 wouldn't be worth it, there's only like 3 or 4 exclusives right now on PS5 that are really worth it, god of war 5, returnal I think, and horizon 2, I think if you spent the money for a PS5 you just wouldn't use it that much, on PC you can already play every god of war before 5, horizon 1, spiderman 1 and miles moralis, all uncharted games, you can also use a dualsense on PC and get the haptics and trigger effects, regarding the switch I would personally sell and buy a steam deck but that's just me you'd have to research more if you'd want to do that, I wouldn't say the OLED model is worth the upgrade to be honest
