Would one of those cheap, knock-off NES-on-a-chip all-in-one consoles with loads of games built in be a better idea for younger kids to begin with? The games are often simpler, your children might find those more enjoyable than a more complicated N64/PS5 game at this point in time...

I’d say series x because in the s there is no disc slot and if you have a disc game saved on a ext hard drive you can’t play the game on the series s. I have no idea why it just is the way it works for some reason

I know that you don’t want to get a wii, but the earlier models are backwards compatible with GameCube, easier to store, and much cheaper. You get everything you would get from a GameCube with a much more generous price tag.
