I see. The gaming laptop can basically be an Xbox. He can plug that into your TV and play with the family that way using xbox or PS controllers. If he doesn't have it already, you can get him the PC version of the Xbox GamePass subscription. It's about 400+ games for $10 a month. The Xbox version of this (which he will likely get if you get him the xbox) is $15 a month.
Not trying to sway you one way or the other, just letting you know your options.

Honestly I enjoy both. I use the PS5 for single player games mostly while I use the Xbox for mostly multiplayer games.
The S is an option, but I really only recommend it if you are on a limited budget. The extra money for the X is is just way better long term. For starters, you are going to have less space on an S. It says 512 GB, but you only get to use around like 300-350. That fills up pretty damn quick and an expansion card is practically the same price as the console. Another thing is resolution. The games still run well, but you definitely will notice more blur on more recent games.

I fucking hate Elder Scrolls... But I know he has some weird nostalgic love for it for whatever reason. I'll totally mention it to him. Lol

I agree about the PC but he already has a gaming laptop. The console is more of a family option so he can play with the kids.
I wish I was more aware of which titles he actually wants to play. That would probably be helpful in making a decision...

It was condescending AF and I'm not obligated to be nice to comments like that.

Welcome to the internet.
I don't respond politely to condescending comments.

I do find the backwards compatibility of the Xbox much more enticing - The idea of playing through shit that we all missed sounds like a fun endeavor...

That was kind of what I was thinking.
But then I also was thinking - he can just buy a PS5 whenever he gets a chance. I'm finding it nearly impossible, so maybe he won't throw me down the stairs if I hand him the Xbox in light of those circumstances.

Walmart won't ship to me most of the time. Or the shipping is $300. It's crap.

I tried a bunch of them and noticed one called ATube had that nifty little hidden feature (not detailed anywhere in description). So I bought the one time license for it and uninstalled the original YT app. WIN!

Yes, the series s has 512 GB of storage, while the series x has 1 TB or Terabyte, or 1024 GB

Plenty of points, for me anyway, and maybe for OP since I don't gush over Exclusives either and had been fed up with Sonys BS for a while:
-
Lots of games that are Cross Platform Coop/MP with just PC (which was a selling point for me since a few mates jumped back to PC from PS while I wasn't that flush with cash).
-
An Online Store with actually useful filters (like search for all games that has Cross-platform, 120hz/FPS, and many more).
-
Many more games supporting native Mouse & Keyboard and having more open ended customization options (more in line with PC).
-
A steady stream of Game Previews and Early Access titles, of which some are long beta tests through Xbox Insider where players feedback actually have been utilized and appreciated.
-
Discord Voice Chat, where you'll notice an immediate boost in audio quality.
-
A Web browser that is improving and evolving nearing PC standards (So much freedom here, I run a pinned tab with Discord e. g.).
-
A gigantic library of apps, weird, fun but most importantly useful (I found a YT app that auto-blocks ads, an app to test deadzones and drift in controllers, a Remote Desktop app that actually worked hooking up o both PC and Phone, etc).
-
Gamepass Ultimate, every other day there's new cool games to try, (which I pay around 6 bucks a month for because of official Live Gold conversion, that is half of my PS+ monthly cost).
The swap saved gaming for me anyway and I'm now enjoying console gaming again!

PlayStation is absolutely worth staying on, the exclusives make it so. But Xbox also offers a good experience. If it’s possible to have both then you should do so. Or even better, invest in a good PC. All Xbox games are released day one and PlayStation exclusives are slowly making their way onto PC.

Xbox for power, PS for good exclusives. (and the bumpers on the PS4 controllers too)

If I wanted to get a PC that is at least as powerful as a Series X or PS5, how much would it be? (Not including keyboard/mouse)

Look at how much storage costs to upgrade on both. It changes things depending on your needs.

Yeah, that is one part. But part of console appeal is simplicity.

Well, if you're looking for current gen exclusives (games not available on last gen), Xbox only has 3 currently. Looking ahead, you have Starfield and Elder Scrolls that will be current gen only, I believe. Neither of these have release dates. Starfield is currently 2023 but I wouldn't be shocked if that got pushed.
If you're hoping to play these, you have at least a year to save for a Series X (or, better yet, a PC). If you are interested in playing other Xbox "exclusives", well, you can already do that with your Xbox one.
I suggest upgrading the PS5 now since Series X has almost zero current gen exclusives. By the time they do, you'll likely have the money to upgrade your Xbox.

I’ve got both. I’m a long time PS user, but went with series X for back compat and automatic performance upgrades on a catalogue I haven’t really played.
That said, after a year of series x I got a PS5 - PS5 with horizon FW feels more premium and next gen than anything I’ve played on series X.

Gamepass. The recent PS Plus update shows why MS is so far ahead of Sony in this area. The day a 1st party Sony exclusive comes to Plus on day of release I'll drop dead. Ragnarok, Ratchet, Spiderman, Last of Us etc would all be "free" if they where MS owned.
