I'm not sure what you mean about handwaving everything that agrees with us? I'm not saying this data should be published, I'm just saying that it's surprising the level of pushback it's getting on a reddit sub, the pushback generally seeming to reject the results. The results are not surprising at all. I don't see the harm in someone taking some anecdotal data in their own class and sharing it here. I do see the harm in a lot of these comments basically saying, "but women don't really earn good grades, but this headline is so flawed, but but but" when the conclusions of this anecdotal story align with more robust data. It would be like if you say your friend died in a drunk driving accident, so drunk driving is bad, and everyone flooded you with, "but that's a sample size of 1!!!!!!" Like... Yea but also we know this is a real thing so chill.

Your last paragraph is just untrue, sounds like you're basing it on the nonsense Strumia study that was never accepted into a journal. You also oversimplify: citation data and publication metrics are not fully objective, but bias informs them as well.

That's mostly because most of Europe doesn't meet NATO's minimum recommended defense spending.

Reply to Lego world map of energy to harvest water from the atmosphere [OC] https://doi.org/10.1039/d2ee01071b by WaterScienceProf
This lego map was created from figure 3a of our paper on Thermodynamic limits of Atmospheric Water Harvesting (link in the title). The original figure used hourly data and took weeks of run time on the Bell Cluster supercomputer to process the calculation.
Anyone can use our code on github to convert an image to the correct size, apply bins for colors, and visualize it before buying your legos: https://github.com/arao53/awh-limits/blob/main/lego_maps/warsinger_lego_maps.ipynb
More details about how to create your own Lego figures are on our post on Lego Education: https://www.reddit.com/r/LegoEducation/comments/zubefd/how_to_make_scientific_graphics_out_of_legos/

The North Vietnam had tanks, artillery, surface-to-air missiles and even jet fighters, much supplied by the USSR and PRC.
The Afghans had weapons supplied by the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The stinger surface-to-air missiles sent by the U.S. were as sophisticated as any of the Soviet weapons.
Don’t act like simple rice farmers were using SA-2s they slapped together in their fields to shoot down B-52s.

Why is the table at the bottom of Highest by GDP formatted the way it is? Is the empty space between the country name and percentage proportional the percentage?

800, thats ridiculous. I live in a shithole and have become a phisician on free university education and have acess to a free universal healthcare that has provided for oncology treatment for more than one relative. You guys deserve better than this, americans are just awesome. Hope this change. Being a sole superpower is just sad. You guys could be colonizing the solar system by now

There are plenty of scientists and engineers and teachers(of sorts) in the military. It’s not just meatheads with guns

Did you know that Africa is 14 times larger than Greenland. Please don't use the Mercator projection for maps like this. I suggest Equal Earth or Eckert IV.

Even discount the larger U.S. economy, because we’re trying to project force around the world it is FAR more expensive than just trying to defend U.S. soil.

According to this the US is 16th in spending compared to GDP in 2020. Looking at the top 20-30, I can’t really say I feel like we’re in good company.
