Bnei Brak is a city in the greater Tel Aviv metropolitan area that is home to mostly Ultra Orthodox Jews. Being that it's mostly a low income community there isn't too much vertical building (skyscrapers are more common to high income and business areas like Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan), but due to their typically high birth rate (in average over 6 kids per household) the population density there is still incredibly high as large families share small, cramped apartments.

I remember my first credit card. I used it for like a $15 purchase. Once.

Then I tried to pay it, but being a little naive I typed in my routing number or account number incorrectly to pay it.

I checked the day after it should have gone through.

$35 charge because wrong account number.

$35 charge for being late.

I fixed it immediately, grumbling about that $15 purchase costing me almost $100, but accepting I was the dumbass who made the mistake.

THEN I received a nasty call from the credit card company demanding payment, to which I explained to them what happened and that I corrected the mistake and paid it off.

And then said screw it, and cut that thing up. They needed me more than I needed them.

Since then, I've had several credit cards, but they've never made a dime off me directly again.

Line of credit accounts, sure. Loans, sure.

But nope.

At least among the omnivores in my family, my seitan "carne" asada is a massive hit.

It's wheat gluten powder hydrated with brown veggie & mushroom broth, with cumin, chili powder, and a dash of soy sauce. Baked. Then diced and browned in corn oil with minced onion, a little more soy sauce, and a hint of molasses. Serve with freshly made corn tortillas and pico de gallo or tomatillo-aguacate salsa.

In Uruguay, during the pandemic, informal jobs had another reason to fall.

Formal jobs had unemployment insurance (you still had an income even without going to work, because it was closed), for some sectors it lasted more than a year, as activity lowered it was plain suspended for the pandemic. Informal jobs didn’t had that protection. 2021 and 2022 should had big changes there. Now it could be rising again, but probably less than before the pandemic.

Nice way of saying people are stupid. You’re not wrong.

Assuming they were financially educated and pushing their personal finances to the edge, they’d most likely switch over to BNPL which charges a fraction of the cost for late payments.

Ever notice Credit Cards don’t require you to establish how you’re going to pay and put auto-pay on by default? Can tell you at a major US Credit Card Issuer the rate is LOW for auto-pay enrollment.

I am from Kathmandu and lived in NYC for a decade. I believe it.

Much of KTM population comes from people from other parts of the country. KTM is not just an administrative hub being a capital, but it’s the biggest city with the biggest airports and other conveniences not afforded in other part of the county (though there are many cities that have sprung up in recent years). During Dashamin, Nepali’s biggest festival, these residents go back to their home town and population of Kathmandu dips down in orders of magnitude

... "state taxes" pay for local government, infrastructure (local roads and maintenance, snow removal), address community issues (parks, recreation, libraries), etc.
... communities which are desirable to live in have citizens who are willing to bear the burden and take part in their local well-being

COL
making COL adjustments opens a door to a million "yeah, but ... " exceptions and "what about"s which never-end; essentially detracting and distracting from the message:
e.g. NY and NJ have larger tax burden (and, thereby, have larger COLs) ... people fixate on the COL and neglect the much lower suicide rates of NY and NJ (and the lower opioid use, and lower infant mortality and lower incarceration)

... where does murky COL balance murky QOL? (too hard a question to answer; so people continue yammering about COL using the price of gas and eggs)
