They are referring to the Rio Pact between several countries in the Americas. It states that attack against one is to be considered an attack against them all, although it is unlikely Venezuela will honour it.

No, that isn’t what I (the article) said.
Don’t believe it if you want, but don’t make it up.

Set to boom is not the same as will boom.
Also, saying don't worry in 30 years you'll be ok isn't particularly helpful to most people.

If you count Pakistan and Bangladesh, the number would be even higher

I don't know what you consider new, but few years ago when I was still working on my thesis Julia was in beta testing I believe. Nice concept at the that time a bit immature but they had few years to improve that.

I know economists rarely use error bars, but how much of the graph would be covered by error bars if you had to add them?

So you didn’t read it?
India’s population growth is slowing considerably (due to start falling after 2050). The economy is set to boom in that time, the article says, suggesting more of the improvements to the quality of life that India is already starting to experience.

Honestly not much. That’s like 51%M/49%F. US runs at 49.5%M/50.5%F and you still see a ton of ugly guys w/o girlfriends.

China also has 34M more men than women.
How is that going to affect their society?

Ah is it the parallel processing? Thats interesting. And yeah I can confirm more weather models (mathematical indeed) use it too
Julia sounds interesting, I had never heard of it before. Is it "new"?

Fortran still refuses to die when it comes to mathematical models. Even the latest generation weather models are still mostly Fortran.
Everyone hates, everyone wants to move to something else, but it is still very difficult to completely replace it.
There have been quite a few contenders during the years - C/C++, Python, R and now Julia - but they all lag behind the parallel processing of the Fortran libraries. It is very difficult changing an established base.
This is why C refuses to die too - it is so tightly integrated with the UNIX system that you simply cannot avoid it.

Reply to comment by eric5014 in The pandemic’s true death toll - The Economist's daily updated estimate of excess deaths around the world by statisticalanalysis_
Thanks, that’s an interesting take on the excess deaths. Looking at the 2022 population pyramid of Australia, I do in fact see little sharp tips at age 75. Combined with some mortality gradient as a function of age, I consider this feasible.
Until now my most likely explanation had been something to do with lockdowns, because Sweden seems to be notably missing the excess deaths. I’m sure they had the same numbers of Covid and vaccines as other European countries (didn’t look into which vaccines they used), but it is known that they had very little lockdown measures.

I disagree, the USA is ideal to be mainly based around train infrastructure for people. I would argue the USA has far better conditions to be mainly train based, than western Europe does.
The size means that it takes incredibly long to travel by car. Trains can be much faster, and are much less of a waste of time. You can literally do anything else when riding a train. If you want to travel long distances without a plane, you could spend several days in a car, doing nothing else but focussing on driving. Or you could travel in a train for a day, in which time you could do anything you wanted.
If you want to see an example of how well trains work in a large country, look at China.
