ELI5: Why is playing dead a trend in animal behavior? Wouldn’t pretending to be dead just allow the predator to eat you?

Was reading about this in possums and hognosed snakes and it just seems like you’re serving yourself up on a plate, seems like hiding or running would always be a better option
