Reply to ELI5: Alzheimer's is dementia, but not all dementia is Alzheimer's. So what is the difference? by degobrah
Think of dementia as a big umbrella symptom. Alzheimer's is just one cause/kind of dementia. Some forms of dementia, like Alzheimer's or Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia, are caused by faulty proteins in neurons (nerve cells). Other forms of dementia, particularly ones that affect younger people and children (yup, children can have dementia and it's horrible), can be caused by genetic errors in how cells work and metabolize certain substances. Brain injuries like strokes, particularly lots and lots of "mini-strokes", can cause dementia too. Some infectious diseases, like syphilis and HIV/AIDS, can also cause dementia. Then there's also prion diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, where a type of misfolded protein makes healthy/normal proteins in the brain get all twisted up, causing progressive and rapid brain damage.
So dementia itself is not a disease, but a symptom or result of a disease or injury affecting the brain.

Money is more like a communication tool than anything else, it communicates society’s value for your stuff allowing you a proportional access to society’s resources.
That problem of resource distribution does not disappear if you remove the communication method. That’s like saying the neighbours are arguing over the boundary line, if they were unable to speak they wouldn’t have a problem. The underlying issue of resource distribution would not be solved if they couldn’t communicate

I mean yes. But also no. Resources for everything are limited. And greed is a thing. So when individuals/corporations/governments hoard our limited resources it’s hard to progress things like major space exploration past a certain point.

Reply to comment by Gnonthgol in ELI5: Is it theoretically possible to find new chemical elements? by wansifu2
Eh, there's still a lot of interesting things going on in batteries. The new frontier is nano-materials, though. This is where shit can get wild and into real "unobtanium" type properties. Self repairing materials. Materials that can change properties depending on conditions. Molecular robots. A lot of work is being done around carbon, but there is still a wide open range of possibilities.
Oop. And ceramics. That's been a lot of the last 50 years. I keep saying batteries, but there's an increasing amount of money going into conductors and energy storage. But, ceramics have been hot for awhile.

The problem with that first plan is that exchange rates aren't fixed. Generally the more money you print, the lower your exchange rate will go.

Money is not a thing on its own, its a representation of labor and resources. So you are basicly asking if we could build rockets with out using labor and resources. I mean yeah if you could make a rocket just apear out of nothing sure it would help but that is not physicly possible.

True, I suppose it's not viable in the event that a country owes money to an individual. But against countries or banks? I'm not so sure

But what if someone wanted to use that money? no one gets money and proceeds to never use it ever.

Reply to comment by [deleted] in (eli5)Why is Islam not banned? by Realistic_Soup8881
The IRA regularly committed terrorist acts throughout mainland UK. Typically IRA members are Catholic so is Christianity on the table for banning?
Now you are going to say no.
Which is fair enough, but maybe this might give you a different angle to look from.
Why punish the whole Muslim faith for the acts of terrorism, but give the Catholic Irish a pass?
Because you believe in thier cause?
So does that mean one person's terrorist is another's freedom fighter?...just asking as I would like to see your point of view.

ANYONE can declare something. It's just a matter of how much stock you put in the declaration.

All currency, although for bonds and bills it's mostly from reserves held at the central bank

If the debt was past due maybe, but that would be because the country couldn’t pay its debts not that it had them.

All but two were cancelled and destroyed, these two were given to American and British treasury secretaries and are in private hands. Serial number ‘8’ was auctioned off for £69,000

Couldn't the argument be made that a ridiculous amount of debt also reduces faith in the currency?

>If we were able to have rockets built without money stopping us , we could start having resources from outer space like asteroids , moons , planets etc , we could also do a lot of researches expanding our technology , making us more complex , having bases around the solar system , we could start by putting resources on a base on moon , mars or other planets , we could even have space travel from not rockets , but skyhooks.
I'm not really sure what you're asking here - could you rephrase your question?
Money is an intermediary tool to facilitate the exchange of goods and services. It has no impact on those goods or services. A house is still a house, a pizza is still a pizza and a rocket is still a rocket - whether you pay for them in Euro, Bitcoin or sheep does not matter.
