Reply to comment by mrPandabot35 in ELI5 Why aren't we curing more degenerative diseases with stem cell research? by KaishiXYZ
the entire field is shifting from embryonic stem cells to induced stem cells that come from any tissue of a patient (liver, skin, you choose). feel free to google to know more. there's also alot of research going into the direction of reprogramming cells, which is the baby step towards what OP was mentioning. Still a long way to go.
also. stop with the healthy people bad pharma agenda. It's not a real thing. I understand where it comes from and there are certainly if not mostly capitalist pricks on the top of some pharma companies. Pharma is not one big conspiracy. If they all make money off sick people that never get healthy, well then just take 2 mins to think what happens if one of them finds a cure to a disease, they make a shitton of money while all the competitors therapies will be obsolete. Yes, pharma is about profitability, but thats not a pharma problem, its a system problem.

Reply to Eli5. What is something you wish you knew before/during your wifes/gfs pregnancy? by Ts0mmy
I wish I knew how elongated the baby's head would be at birth. I freaked out when I saw the shape of her head. It sorts itself out over the first day or two.

I wish this comment was higher up. While it's true that our personality and a lot of what we consider as part of our minds, is significantly driven by hormones as well, the number of pseudoscientific comments claiming that the brain is not the primary organ responsible for human consciousness is just ridiculous.

Isn't it more a case of funding (bang for buck) and necessity? Vaccines for COVID-19 were developed at light speed (really big bang) compared to the usual time it takes.

Ok, even if I stretch to include the endocrine system as a "decision making centre" (it's not really), other than the nervous and endocrine systems what other "decision making centre" are you talking about.

There are a lot of adults at the pool. Some of them are misbeahving by running clock wise around the pool. The lifeguard got annoyed and send out other adults that run counter clockwise. These adults smash into each others and stop being obnoxious.
Edit: so noise cancelling headphone detects those obnoxious adults, their locations and their behaviors. Then the headphone sends to these location exactly opposite adults and let them smash into each other and cancel each other out.
Edit 2: we can get a bit more technical (eli6 maybe?). The headphone detects the obnoxious adults by running the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. The algo tells the headphone two things about the obnoxious adults: 1. the adult size (amplitude) and 2. its speed + direction around the pool (phase). The headphone produces the opposite adults with these characteristics: 1. same size (same amplitude) 2. same speed but move in a different direction(antiphase or phase-shifted by 180 degree ie clockwise vs counter clockwise). When the obnoxious adults and the opposite adults smash into each other (destructive interference), they both get knocked the F*** out.

Reply to ELI5: Why plates get too hot to touch in the mircrowave but the food can still be cold? by jerrycotton
Due to its porous nature and water content, clay heats up. The glaze is never perfect and contains numerous microcracks that allow bacteria and other contaminants to enter.
The same can be said for wooden cutting boards. If you put one in the microwave, it will become hot.
Because the porosity breeds fungus spores of all kinds, both are extremely unsanitary to use.
Pyrex glass containers are my recommendation. They always work perfectly, and you can simply cover the leftovers and store them in the refrigerator at any time.

First of all, it's their, not there.
Contrary to some people's beliefs, declaring yourself independent from the US doesn't actually help you. Sovereign citizens, American nationals, and Moorish try this often.
US law still applies to all their citizens and to all non citizens within their jurisdiction.
Declaring yourself as an independent only opens you up to all laws from every nation everywhere. This really only becomes an issue on the high seas as that's the only real place that people are without a jurisdictional government.
Without a large following, declaring independence is futile.

Reply to comment by Officialsparxx in ELI5: How web crawlers and other engines don’t constantly get infected with viruses? by Officialsparxx
A crawler is only vulnerable to the input that it tries to parse or execute. Wayback Machine may archive windows executables, but it's certainly just treating them as binary bytes if so, and wouldn't even know how to execute them.
So I'd expect Wayback Machine to be immune to downloads to weird executables.

It has kind of been understood for a couple of generations at LEAST that this is not the case? There are three decision making centres in the body and only one of those is in the head. The sense of self is largely centered there so it 'feels' like it should be the answer. Plus, intuitively, you can lose arms and legs and function but not the head. So it made sense to assume that before they realised Neurons exited throughout the entire body.

Because they just read and write, and don't execute. Kinda like copypasta
You can read a manual on how to hurt yourself physically without being harmed. Just acting on it is damaging you

Some search engines do execute JavaScript. In particular both Bing and Google have "engines" based on Chromium.
> Bing is adopting Microsoft Edge as the Bing engine to run JavaScript and render web pages.
> Googlebot now runs the latest Chromium rendering engine

Reply to ELI5: What happens with an education system that makes people Capitalize Every Word In The Sentence? Is that some kind of an oversight, or it's just typical for people who speak English as their L2? by shejesa
Where do you see this happening? Can you give some more context?
English is not my native language, but I come in contact with it on a daily basis. [Internet, work, etc] I've seen writing in English from many native and non-native speakers and never seen (as far as I remember) anyone do this. Apart maybe for stylistic reasons in titles of books or movies (generally they then don't capitilize the smaller gramatical words like 'of', 'and', 'the' etc).
The only thing that comes to mind is that maybe you've specifically met people who speak the same language in which they capitalize every word, so they copied it in English. Like in German all nouns are capitalized, so I can imagine some Germans sometimes making the mistake of capitalizing words in English that normally aren't capitalized in English.
