If I hit your head hard enough with a rock, your personality can change, and you can lose memories. We also perceive all of our senses from the head.
It wasn't too hard to piece together. Then we started cutting chunks of it out, and that basically confirmed it

Reply to comment by cherrybounce in ELI5: Why does putting one foot out from under the blankets bring so much relief of heat while laying in bed? by SirDuke6
This is the right answer. It’s not just about draining heat, but the key is that they can drain and regulate temperature very effectively. So sticking one foot out is enough to regulate your temperature, which it can’t do effectively when your whole body is hot. It’s an adaptive radiator when stuck out.

Reply to ELI5 How do companies make money by selling products at a low price and competing with other companies? by [deleted]
Companies cannot just lower the price of their products. They will determine how much profit they would like to make per sale. If Walmart and Costco are selling the same product, If Walmart is charging $5 more than Costco, everybody will go to Costco. So now a Costco has two options: lower the price of the product and take less profit or find an efficiency.
Efficiencies are ways to lower cost or time to move a product. This includes manufacturing costs, labor and taxes and fees. This way companies can compete against each other, incentivizing each other to find efficiencies in the market.

Reply to Eli5. What is something you wish you knew before/during your wifes/gfs pregnancy? by Ts0mmy
Be prepared for some grossness. Pregnancy does crazy ass things to your body. Puking, lots of puking. Farts, lots of farts, especially while she sleeps. Weird cravings, give her them all 😂. Uber Eats can become your best friend. Be ready for irrational emotions, like crying bc the grocery store is out of flaming hot munchies so you got flaming hot cheetos and that’s NOT THE SAME.
Pregnant women can also be super horny so be prepared to take one for the team if your greasy-haired baby momma comes at you in three day old pajamas.
She might also want zero sex so be prepared to help yourself and just treat her like a Queen, before and after baby comes. Never pressure a postpartum mother into having sex. This is so cringe to have to say but you would be SHOCKED by how many women say their partners are pressuring them to have sex before the doctor even medically clears them. It’s 6-8 weeks so, it’s very doable.
Be prepared for postpartum to be hairy. A woman’s body does amazing things during pregnancy and childbirth… and afterwards it goes a little haywire. PP hormones are insane, postpartum anxiety and depression are extremely common. PP women smell [bad] so their baby recognizes them. She’ll probably wanna live in the DIY mesh diapers for at least a couple of weeks. Her hair will start falling out around 4 months PP and can take about 12-18 months to recover.
If she wants to breastfeed, I recommend researching “how to support your partner through breastfeeding”, versus just researching breastfeeding.
White noise will become your best friend. We have a Dohm sound machine in every room. lol.
*Adding one last thing. Be prepared to go to bat for her. Pregnant women and new mothers are gaslit quite often, and many times it’s by medical professionals and family. Trust her and have her back 100%. Even if it’s up against say… your mom.

Reply to ELI5: Tech billionaires lost $400 billion this year. Where does it go? Does anyone gain? by ChickenEnthusiast
It’s the possible money that could be made.
If you own an item which is $5 now, in the future increases by $10, and the value becomes $15, did you get handed a 10 dollar bill? No.
Say the item now goes down to $3
You didn’t get any money taken directly out of you, but you LOST what could’ve been taken advantage of.

Code is not self-executing. I know certain articles can make it seem like it, but the reason code is "self-executing" is really because your program is instructed to "download, read, and follow all instructions at <website>".
If you don't want or need that, you can just make a program that just downloads the page, without running the code. Or you can limit what code it can run.
Like, imagine a really stupid chef. You hand him a recipe and he makes the food. One day you hand him the recipe for a Molotov cocktail, and he blows up the kitchen. The issue isn't the recipe - it's the chef.

I can answer for PD but other neurodegenerative diseases are similar.
Unfortunately, for Parkinson's disease, stem cell treatments have not been very successful so far. Part of the reason is that the abnormal protein (alpha-synuclein) which causes the degeneration of neurons continues to spread, even in the grafted stem cells. In other words, we are not addressing the underlying reason for the degeneration.
Also, stem cells are meant to replace neurons in areas of the brain responsible for movement. We already have fairly good treatments for those symptoms (including levodopa). Parkinson's gets more challenging to treat when it starts to affect other parts of the brain and causes "non-motor symptoms". Stem cells would not help with those symptoms.
There are other adverse effects of stem cells like dyskinesia and the theoretical risk of cancer, etc.
It's still an area of active research so there is still hope. It may be an adjunct treatment to disease-modifying treatments in the future.

TL;DR: stem cells replace neurons but don't fix the underlying problem that causes the death of neurons

Just wanted to add that every persons visual perspective and inner voice, thinking, hearing, dreaming - it’s all coming from the head and not the stomach or the arms. I don’t think most people was in shock when they learned about the brain. Most probably intuitively knew and just called it the soul instead.

Reply to comment by Anonymous_Bozo in ELI5 Why are bigger versions of items often more economical? by TangerineLeading9856
This is the correct answer. I used to own a vape juice company. The actual juice costs maybe a penny per ml. The bottle + label costs several dollars each. A larger bottle costs maybe a few dollars more than the smaller ones, but I can charge almost double. I would make much more money selling a larger bottle than a smaller one.

Reply to comment by brownlawn in ELI5: why gas fireplaces have long orange flames while gas stoves have very short blue flames. by brownlawn
A blue flame means the fuel (gas) is combusting fully - complete. Incomplete means not all the gas is being consumed in the reaction with the excess being released into the atmosphere.

Reply to Eli5. What is something you wish you knew before/during your wifes/gfs pregnancy? by Ts0mmy
My experience as someone who was in his 40's for our son is not so much the pregnancy stuff. My "moment" happened when he was born and I held him (mum was exhausted so I got him for the first couple hours). It almost indescribable to be honest. I found it to be the most emotional moment of my life. It sounds soppy but I felt a real sense of knowing what absolute love was. He was (and still is after nearly 12 years) the most beautiful thing I can imagine (he would roll his eyes hearing it though). I got to be a stay at home Dad which was the best few years ever. Every new development I saw first hand and would blab about it. I wish you the best with your child. As far as the pregnancy goes, just roll with it whatever happens. You're missus will dictate the terms of day to day life but you probably already knew that. 🙄

...eh, that's like saying that software doesn't physically exist.
But it does. The pattern in the RAM and CPU is a real electrical charge and has real physical manifestation. Same with the pattern of connections, electrochemical signals, and hormones in the head.
Lemme make that clear. You're claiming something exists, but doesn't physically exist, like it exists outside of physics or something. It's bullshit.

Even extremely powerful magnets are quite benign. Take MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) for example. The tissues will warm a little, but well within what is safe.
Perhaps you are thinking of a shock wave? Like an IED outside an armoured vehicle. The armour might prevent any shrapnel penetration, but the shock wave alone can cause an acquired brain injury.

Reply to ELI5. Why is honey and lemon a popular cure for cold like symptoms. What makes lemon more effective than say an orange or lime? by alexkid_in_realworld
Any lighty acidic hot beverage with fructose (or sucrose) would cause the same effect of reducing coughing (most regular cough "medicine" is 99% sugar), so if you ran out of lemon you could try with apple cider vinegar, and honey can be really substituted with any other syrup.
Lime would be ok but most orange variants are heavily engineered towards sweetness in detriment of acidity, so not as effective.
A century ago, the original treatment on Europe was hot herbs/lemon liquors (diluted in water) and sweet wines, which also comes with a few extra "side effects".

Orange flames in a gas burning device can indicate improper fuel-oxygen mixture as it's not combusting properly. This can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Call your utility/gas provider/maintenance personnel and get it checked for the problem!
Wood-burning fireplaces have orange flames because of the sodium present in wood, btw!

Reply to comment by atfyfe in ELI5: How did we realise the mind is in the brain? by theembryo
This!!
The mind is the "conceptual" brain, something like the operating system which runs in the hardware which is the human body. Consciousness being the show, as atfyfe said, is being aware that you are both your body acting as dictated by the mind and the mind controlling the body.
Additionally, I believe muscle memory is also part of the "mind" concept. Therefore, your full body is your mind and you must be mindful of your body.
If you go one step further then you exist also outside of your body, in the minds of other people with wich you interacted. It's not the real you, just a splinter.
However, we can go even further, if you believe in the power of a global consciousness, that speck in the mind of the people you interacted with is still your mind but in their body. But this sounds like sci-fi already so I'll stop here before getting to astral projections which are not bound by the speed of light, therefore not bound by the concept of time.
