Sure, but ya know, Occam's Razor. Why suppose the brain is the middle man to an unseen object when treating it as the final object works fine?

Reply to comment by Gullible-Flounder-79 in Eli5 : is the order of the colors in a real rainbow always the same? and why , whichever it is? by Just_a_happy_artist
Yes, and for a rainbow in sunlight the centre of the circle is always exactly opposite the sun, and normally the rain that generates the rainbow is some distance away. It's unusually to be able to look into the distance downwards.

Yes. But everything is also moving fast perpendicular to the falling direction. Like it’s falling down, but it’s also going thataway so fast that it always misses the Earth. And there’s no air in space to slow you down, so you just keep going thataway and keep missing the Earth.

Reply to comment by logicaltuvok in ELI5: Why is it that, at some gas stations, it’s cheaper to pay with cash instead a credit card? by tgjj530
While this is true, the fees for debit cards are usually smaller than the fees from credit companies, so it's still preferable to credit for a lot of businesses.

Reply to ELI5: The main difference between Christianism, Judaism, Buddhism and Muslim religions by sp4rkk
Religions are belief systems that either reproduce themselves or die out. Like genes there will be a process that ensures or fails to ensure survival.
-
Judaism reproduces itself primarily by attachment to the Jewish race, hence the confusion as to whether the term might refer to a religion or a race. This confusion does not apply to the other two.
-
Christianity primarily reproduces and multiplies itself by conversion (preaching) and also by passing down the generations.
-
Islam reproduces itself by forcible conquest and then passing down the generations.

It is possible to shift that with meditation, it can be used as a way to sort of train yourself to focus attention on different things. I'd say it's a bit like if someone tells you to "make yourself heavy", you can't literally change your weight with your mind but you don't consciously think which muscles to relax and so on either, you just sort of... be heavy. So you can try to "be in your foot" and think about how the other parts of your body are moving around that instead. I've had it click sometimes but it promptly surprises me out of the state.
Also with meditation, psychedelic/dissociative drugs and things like sensory deprivation chambers, people sometimes experience complete dissociation where their awareness is fully outside their body!

Reply to comment by Rahf in ELI5 Why aren't we curing more degenerative diseases with stem cell research? by KaishiXYZ
People underestimate how much the research for COVID vaccines was streamlined. It didn't skip steps, but every step could happen immediately as soon as the previous was done. No waiting around for funding, no trying to convince anyone that it's a worthwhile project, no being sidelined because something else was more profitable. Just GO GO GO. Thousands and thousands of researchers worldwide with a singular focus.
It was pretty cool to see.

I edited my comment to make more sense. the type of magnetic wave I mean are say you're counting numbers then you suddenly start talking gibberish because I directed a strong magnetic wave at your brain, but it's only temporary and should not, for some reason, be used for recreational purposes.

Reply to ELI5: What makes the rust on a rusty nail different from the rust on shaving razors to where one needs an immediate tetanus shot and the other happens daily by DrySyllabub2563
Tetanus is an anaerobic bacteria. It thrives in deep puncture wounds where there is no air circulation. That’s why they are related to rusty nails in peoples heads, but the rust has nothing to do with it. It’s the deep wound with a small entry point.

But technically you are hearing 2 opposite sounds? So your hearing membrana in the ear hears both and vibrates and then you interpret it as scilence? Or the waves compensate each other and your ear membrana stays still?

This assumes the triangle was already a right triangle. Circluar (pun intended) reasoning. Also it only explains those two specific triangles.

Reply to ELI5: If I were to eat a thousand Snickers bars, I would put on significantly more weight than if I were to eat a thousand heads of cabbage despite the huge disparity in weight of the pre-consumed food. Where does this mass come from? by marcuschookt
You can’t eat 1000 heads of cabbage in one sitting. Your stomach would rupture and you would die. You have to poop it out first.
Cabbage is mostly water and fiber. Your body can’t digest fiber, so you don’t get anything out of it (other than it giving your intestines a good cleaning scrape on its way out). You don’t get fat from cabbage, because virtually 100% of it just goes right into the toilet.
A Snickers bar has lots of delicious fats and sugars in it. Your body can use that. If you eat more calories than you use with exercise, then you gain fat. Since your body thinks you are a caveman who needs to store fat to survive times of drought and famine, instead of a lazy fatass with a thousand Snickers bars, it stores as much of that energy as possible. It converts it into fat. A lot of it will still come out as poop, but your body can retain much more of the Snickers bar than it can the cabbage.

The difference is how deep the dirty part gets pushed into your tissue. The Clostridium tetani bacterium hates oxygen (air), but is happy like a bug in a rug when introduced to the anaerobic Petri dish that is your tissues under the skin. Doesn’t have to be a nail; getting stabbed with anything that was exposed to dirt could be a problem

You might like to visualise this way:
- Draw your triangle.
- Draw the triangle you get from rotating the fist triangle 180 degrees about the centre of the circle.
- You can see, without doing the work of proving it, that what you have constructed can only be a rectangle and all four corners will be of 90 degrees.

Tetanus is not related to rust. Tetanus lives in the soil outside and only infects you if the object you get stabbed by was outside, exposed to contamination by rain splatter and such. Exposure and rain also happens to make metal rusty. Getting tetanus from a rusty nail outside is correlation not causation. You can also get tetanus from a completely rust free garden tool if you stab yourself with it.

My understanding was that razors go dull due to micro rusting that happens from the wet/dry cycle since your can’t get them ever fully dry.
Could be wrong on that though and my whole understanding of razors is 🤯

No, because I read the instructions. ;-) (To explain it with similar complexity as in the question, not to a literal 5-year old. Also, as I expected there to be plenty of literal ELI5 answers.)

Reply to ELI5: Why does putting one foot out from under the blankets bring so much relief of heat while laying in bed? by SirDuke6
Because blanket provides a kind of safety and the leg controls the temperature, so you feel safe and comfortable.
Blankets are warm, soft, cover(“protect”) you. By being under a blanket you feel safety, comfort. And it separates you from the outside world, making it easier to fall asleep. But despite all the positive effects of being under a blanket, temperature can’t be controlled.
