Well, one of them is that you should throw salt over your shoulder if you spill on the table.

Companies don't want to carry cash over to the new year. Then its profit that gets taxed. Spend it on business expenses and it is tax free. Ideally, you'd spend that money on investments that improve the company's performance. I work in manufacturing, there is always a rush to spend your profits in Nov/Dec to update equipment.

Reply to ELI5: If penicillin became the pinnacle antibiotic why are many of us now allergic? by stealth941
Penicillin is not the "pinnacle" antibiotic at all. It was the first one discovered. Since then thousands more have been created, most of which are better for at least a few types of infection.
And all allergies have the same root cause: some molecule is similar enough in structure to a molecule we use in our own body that our immune system gets "confused" and attacks us thinking it is attacking invaders.

I'll take you up on this, comrade.
If the only options are "We want Billionaires rich so we can eat the crumbs" or "We want Billionaires poor so we can all suffer" then there is merit in choosing to eat crumbs. We're proposing a third option for Billionaires to still be rich and pay their fair shares of taxes. Why is this a red herring?

Oof, I wouldn't view dosing directions as a suggestion. There's some stuff that you really don't want more than a certain amount in a certain time. Acetaminophen comes to mind. It's not going to make you throw up, it will just damage your liver, I believe. I dunno, look this up on actual medical sites, not just random Reddit posts.

The heart is actually also part of the mind as well. The heart can store memories. There’s have been reports of personality changes after heart transplant surgeries. In cases that were looked into the change resembled the donor.

You would hate to hear about how the government does the same thing with our "tax dollars".
We regularly get calls from govt organizations that have budget for equipment. As an example, let's say they budgeted for $2000 for a laptop. I ask, what do you need to do with that laptop?
The answer is generally browse the web and check email, write documents.
I explain they can do that with a $750 laptop, so if they have $2000 budgeted, we can get 2 for them.
That's not acceptable, they need to spend that money on 1 laptop so when they show their inventory and assets report, there's no extra equipment.
So, they get a $2000 laptop.
It's maddening.

Hardware alone cannot do a lot of stuff that we see today, the true power lies in silicon, and consequently the computation it does. Also, software is far from being 'too slow', I'd even go ahead and say that software at present is far more quicker than hardware.

It doesn’t have to be perfect to still be effective. Let’s say you have a sound coming in at 150 dB, which is definitely not hearing safe, and the headphones have a delay so they can’t perfectly match up the anti-wave directly over the incoming wave - as long as the anti-wave moves the crests and troughs in the right direction, you create this new wave that’s mostly cancelled out, but you might get some, like 5 or 8 or 3 dB through, which is much safer

People can be allergic to anything, and penicillin is pretty much mold cultures. The fact that it is used as an antibiotic doesn't make it more or less likely to be an allergen.

Reply to ELI5: How web crawlers and other engines don’t constantly get infected with viruses? by Officialsparxx
a) zero day exploits really aren't that common anymore - most viruses require a human to manually start them, just visiting a web site and clicking links won't do it
b) most crawlers aren't actually "looking" at most of the content, so they'd just move around the virus without actually being affected by it
c) any exploit would likely be targeted against common browsers - the environment of the crawler would be different and the exploit/virus likely wouldn't work there, unless specifically targeting the crawler (and targeting the crawler is hard, because unlike the browser, it's not public so you can't easily test your attack)
d) if the operators have any common sense, the crawlers running inside a sandbox, so exploiting the crawler does nothing and the sandbox will be automatically destroyed and recreated from a clean version on a regular basis
e) targeting crawlers specifically would be a dangerous game: due to the sandboxing it's not too valuable, but you're exposing your (valuable) zero day to an environment that could be tightly monitored. If you get caught, your zero day will be fixed and become worthless.

Excellent explanation.
Maybe worth adding that noise cancelling often gets mixed up with noise suppression.
Noise cancelling = actively reducing the noise by making the opposite sound (as described above)
Noise reduction = passively blocking the sound from getting in by plugging/covering your ear canal

Reply to ELI5: What makes the rust on a rusty nail different from the rust on shaving razors to where one needs an immediate tetanus shot and the other happens daily by DrySyllabub2563
Don’t shave with a rusty razor. As others have said rusty things make have bacteria on them and while things outside like nails will have the bacteria that causes tetanus razors can have other bacteria.
In 2007 at The Excalibur, in Las Vegas, NV. A Las Vegas a woman shaved her legs with a rusty razor blade and got a Group A streptococcal infection, which develops into necrotizing fasciitis ("flesh-eating" bacteria), when she cut herself. The bacteria in her blood stream broke through a wart in her face and started eating away at her face, eventually killing her from sepsis.
Throw out rusty razors.

I did this once with some old prescription cough syrup for my daughter. It didn't contain any opiates, but whatever it was definitely had hallucinogenic effects at the dose I took. Everything looked animated, or like reality was CGI. Plus I felt like I couldn't remember how to talk. It was intense and not pleasant.
